ICT Technician wanted : BEXLEYHEATH, Kent

Hi All...

The School seeks to appoint to the following post as soon as possible:-

ICT TECHNICIAN (salary c£16,500, full time position, entry point on the salary scale will depend on qualifications and experience.)

To aid the existing team and Network Manager in maintaining a high level of ICT provision to the school.

The duties will include Client and Server maintenance, software installation, both wired and wireless networking, and working with multimedia devices.
Experience is essential in a client/server and help desk environment; however a broad range of expertise is preferred. Individual skills that can be brought to this position will be looked at on merit and training will be provided.

The school has undertaken to provide a high level of ICT facilities for staff and students, and this is an exciting opportunity to take on demanding and rewarding roles that require excellent communication skills, resilience and a calm professional manner when the pressure is on.

This position will be subject to a satisfactory enhanced CRB check.

Because, it is an important issue, and people feel strongly about it? Because those posting should be made aware that the pay that they are offering is cr*p? That paying so little will cause them to most likely get a useless muppet who doesn't know his RAM from his ROM?

The job specifications a bit harsh. Who the hell qualified with a CCNA or MCSE is going to approach a job offering 16k, and not fully utilizing any technology apart from being a general monkey.

1) If you dont like the salary, dont apply. Don't slate it here.
2) MCSE or CCNA are desireables with training offered, as it says in the JD.
3) Yes I would let someone on that salary touch my servers.

how about advertising for a teacher on £16k, fully qualified?

It's different kettle of fish for teacher, but techies (trained or otherwise) still need to put food on the table!

Hasn't Kent just been BSF'ed to Northgate... how would the TUPING work as there is no job protection under 1 year of service..

how about advertising for a doctor on 16k or an airline pilot..... totally different jobs...

16k is about the average in my LA and I'm sure that 16k goes far further up here than in Kent

and as for the poster who claims that 16k only gets muppets.... 16k is bang in the middle of scale 3 up here - the average for ICT techs - a lot of good techs I work with in my LA are on that whack and they're certainly not muppets.

It seems that being paid more than 16k doesn't appear to enhance your personal skills, well in some cases at least.

The average pay in the IT industry is over £30k. That would be someone with qualifications and experience. £16k is ridiculous if you are thinking CCNA/MCSE is desirable. The minimum for those sort of qualifications should be at least £20k. You say 'a lot of good techs' but I would question that. Sure, there are some, but the majority are not - else why would the government be using the BSF sledgehammer?

Someone asked for reasons, I gave some. IMO, £16k is a pathetic amount of money for what is a highly skilled job. As such, there are a multitude of other places which pay higher for lower skills in the same industry! Take a look at the back of any Computing magazine, or do a search on a job site. You'll soon see what I mean. Personal skills are working fine here thank you, I just don't like to see schools ripping people off.
