I've seen ICT jobs (basic techies) advertised at 20k+, yet our LEA pays less than 15k for what is essentially the same type of job.
Where are you, and what do you earn? Can the 'industry' come together to have salaries 'standardised' across LEA's?
Thoughts and comments?

Try our effing council then.
On the same day they came back and claimed that the Techs (£15K) the Deputy (£17K) and the IT Man (£19K) - was the right level.
They advertised a post for a 'wipe the bottom' tech for the members.
Car allowance
Laptop
Home Broadband
Granteed three year pay rise plan
Reletivly low level of ability
£20K start.
This I belive is the original 'Insult-to-injury' object lesson

Sounds about right for a commercial equivalent, i was pulling around that in London in 2000 for rather less heavy IT structure than I have here.
I know Education pays badly, but not as bad as my team have it.

Re: What salary?
Hmmm, why do I get the feeling that somehow I'm in the wrong job?
I'm on £11,792 - full time (not term time) and I've been there coming up for 2 years. Oh well, at least I plan to leave and take up a full time uni degree course in Forensic Computing next year!

I've been at the school for 4 years, and only just got on to £15,096 after giving up my term-time holidays (Responsibilities include general tech stuff + email server, website, publicity/publications, VLE administrator...).

4th July 2007, 08:44 PM #11 Re: What salary?
I earn just short of 13,000 - term time only + two weeks (Crap, but I love the job!)
I'm in gloucester, includes all tech stuff, website upkeep, going into class to help with certain lessons, some exchange server, maintaining passwords, print credits, printer maintenance and I've just been left on my own coz my NM moved on. So I've got to roll out new suite of thin clients (and try and learn Citrix on the way) and make sure there is a computer in every room for september and de-install 2 IWB's.
Then only thing I will say that the adverts for techs in the county all seem to be on the grade above what I am on???

Started in a college on £12k, did a year - moved to a school on £15k, job very similar to webman - did a year there. Finally moved to NM job on £18k - now on £31k (Independant School 5 years later).
Important thing to remember is that you can make a career of it - just gain your experience and move on until you hit the right job to stick at. They are out there... keep looking!
My techs are on £17k Pro rata and £15k pro rata (University placement) and I'm trying to squeeze a bit more for them - they deserve it.

Bottom line:
Nobody is working in IT in Education for the money.
As is tradtional for public service, you get boned on the pay.
So watch people leave in droves for commercial postions with better pay & less disrespect from the 'ivory-tower' brigade.
If you stay; at least your moral indignation and self sacrifice will keep you warm - cos you won't be able to afford the heating bill.

Almost nobody! Some of us do get a competitive salary and to get the equivalent pay in the commercial world would take a lot more hours and a lot more stress.

Re: What salary?
This is my first IT technician job. although my pay does suck i have found the experience amazingly valuable, not just working with servers, client machines, networking etc but learning how to handle situations, and people.
I goto work enjoy it come home and study hard on the mcse, and then cry when i see my pay check lol.
Got a work experience lad working along side me next week, and i cant wait!
