I don't ever recall a tie being a sign of a good tech.
I wore a suit as the interviewer to be respectful of the candiate's effort in dressing smart.
I also found that it did set a formal tone to the process, I feel that is important as it IS a process that deserves respect. Once picked however my dress code for my team was always relaxed.

Nor is a pressed uniform a measure of a soldiers range skills. However, soldiers still have to turn up to parade looking top notch because it's a demonstration of the discipline and attention to detail that is important to their job. Those are valuable skills regardless of your profession and I would argue demonstrating them at interview is no bad thing.

Sorry you didn't get the job
Quite bemused about the excel v lookup tables what does that have do with being a senior tech? Did the advert ask for qualifications eg Microsoft Office Specialist or Microsoft Business Certification? Having the ability to find out how to do something like that and prepare a 'How to sheet' for others I could understand, but having to prove you can do it there and then seems strange.
