19th March 2010, 03:09 PM #466 Hi,
sorry you did not get job.
Working for yourself - if you have fixed that many machines you should be able to get work for yourself - I know you said you had spent a lot of money advertisng. What about make some flyers - should not be too expensive to do your self - do a leaflet drop in local area that you can get to without driving.
As long as you have a mobile to contact - also list in yellow pages - it is free for basic entry.
I am sure you could pick work up either fixing pcs, getting rid of spyware etc and also setting up home wireless that people seem to struggle with.
cheers Mark

Where in the UK are you. There's a technician post come up at a local high school near me in King's Lynn, Norfolk.

Did they actually say that, or put in writing.
I thought you were older than that.
Also I maybe looking for a new techy in the summer. Can you get to Faringdon? Money won't be great but just keep an eye out for an advert in the next few months.

22nd March 2010, 09:48 AM #474 I know how you feel about the age thing.
When I got laid off I applied for hundreds of jobs, had a few interviews but most of the excuses for not giving me a job was that I was 'Over Qualified. The penny finally dropped that they meant I was too old came when a young girl who would have been my manager asked me if I minded working for someone younger.
So 'Ageism is alive and very much kicking' in the workplace although they sugar coat it.

This scares the hell out of me.
At nearly 27 and no real specialism to speak of. I just hope not to hear the dreaded redundancy word here! But with cuts in FE spending!!! Who knows?

That’s how I got my first IT tech job; I was the only one under 25 to apply. There is or was some sort of Government initiative to get jobs to under 25’s. I don’t think the school was forced to take people under 25 but there is a push towards that at times.
I don’t recall the details but there was a reference to it in the job advert to under 25's. It was legal a few years back. Dont see why its not legal now.
