There are often projects in cities that will take old computers from individuals and companies and recycle them either for resale, low income families or to send abroad.

Some of these are commercial outfits but many are volunteer based and work with offenders, people with no qualifications, those with disabilities, learning disabled etc.

As an experienced and capable IT professional volunteering your time to assist with these projects (if one exists in your area) will be a great way of increasing your confidence, showing prospective employers initiative and adding something useful to your CV (especially in any job that involves training users).

Not only will any project you work in do good to the recipients of the computers and those people you're working with, it may well be the boost you need for future interviews.

At the very least it will get you out of the house, something that I know through the experiences of others isn't always easy when you've been out of work.

I'm sorry if this has been discussed and dismissed before- just a thought.

I did suspect you'd have suggested that, I posted just in case.

On another note, I do wish that people that want to give up on Axe or want him to give up etc. would just ignore this thread, surely that would be easier than posting?

Really? Well that makes this thread get nudged even more in to the unbelievable section now as far as I'm concerned.

I admit I could be completely wrong, and also admit that I do have an issue when it comes to patience with people who spend more time moaning rather than fixing themselves... but....

If Axe is so highly qualified why is he getting no where?
Have his references and qualifications been checked - i.e. is he lying and being found out at interview?
Has any feedback been sought from previous interviews - is he actively doing something to improve?

I have a decent insight in to Asperges. I have a decent insight in to depression. What I don't have a decent insight in to is how any of this endless misery can be thrust upon someone when it is not at least partly (or largely) self-inflicted.

Careful witch has seen his CV and she dont like people saying things about it.

If he was really that bothered about working he would do anything and everything to find something. I do know about depression and asperges also. My dad suffered from depression for several years after his MS made him wheel chair bound. I use to work with people with Asperges and other problems too.

I think you should stop posting your feeling depressed and do something about it. Not leaving the house for weeks..... right ok. Are we meant to believe this?

I agree with you 100% as I am now finding each of Axe's posts harder to believe. £20 a month for food please pull the the other one. I have been unemployed and have never struggled for food money along with everyone else I have known who is or has been unemployed. I think it is time that this thread is finally put to bed once and for all.

Volunteering can open doors. In 2003 we needed another technician here, of which one was appointed. However, another candidate came as a volunteer as he was unemployed having just been left the textiles industry of 25 years.

After a few months, his posisition became permanent and he is still here today.

Sometimes just a change in your environment, and getting away from the "same four walls" can give you are more postitive outlook on life.

AXE - it would be helpful if you could detail what you have done to try and get a job and how you have been involved with the jobcentre etc, as well as looking for other jobs - just a bullet-pointed list will do - it might help people who haven't time to go back and read the whole thread but might have something helpful to say
Agreed. I'll post a summary soon.

It might be a good idea to to do your summary in a new thread (with a link to this one), then make a final post in this thread linking to the new one and get a mod (witch?) to lock this thread.

It make all this a bit more manageable.

You know its really trite to make statements about 'Finding something'

I got throughly shafted last year by a school I literaly dragged out of the gutter IT-wise and frankly Budget-wise. Having spent six years being paid in bottom 16% for the going rate for IT Manager, and moving the whole shebang from the old sites to a new one - I was made redundant.

I would speculate on the fact it was remarkably timed with the arrival of the evaluation of the my proper grade and back pay - but that may be too cynical, or indeed the fact is coincided with the ending of the deputy heads two year official note on her record for gross misconduct toward me.

But this is an aside to my point; other than to comment the supplied reference may have resulted in the following:

Since May09 I have despite having a Fracking good CV, with superb track records with major players including the several household names; having worked on multi-million pound projects with equal success and savings that would made even the most tight fisted accountant smile at bonus time; had precisely three interviews.

And let me be clear here, I am applying for anything in my skills scope in or out of IT sector.

Is DEAD, an dusty backdrop with nerr a live project. Schools are hunkering down for massive cuts from the LEAs and/or having every Tom, Dick or Harry support-firm trying to sell them on third party cover, private sector is on a pay and employment freeze; anybody & everybody is chasing whats left.

I have actually met AXE as we went for a role; he was little quiet and no doubt found me far to talkative ; but he was there, he looked up for it and I understand has technical skills far outstripping my own. I am a specialist trouble shooting manager, I can still do the tech - but its been a long time since I got myself really down and dirty with techs.

He isn't getting the roles for the same reason I am not, its a buyers market, where they are buying at all. The roles are even going on hold during interview process!!

Economic recovery? Falling unemployment? - bull, by the proper description of a Depression, we have been in one for over six months. The figures are worse than the 1930's depression, the effects only mitigated by the welfare state.

So far I have lost my job, then despite having no credit of debt - or house because I was paid so badly, my ability to pay for rent, support my family or in anyway live properly.

You get £128.60 for two weeks on JSA, you lose that in six months. You MIGHT get income support - but don't bet on it, You MIGHT get housing support but you have jump through hoops - and then try finding a landlord that will put up with the DSS habit of not paying on time.

You still have to pay council tax if your living anywhere, you still have to be able to fund access tot he Internet & a phone because thats where IT work is found and applied for, and there is transport - and forget public transport because I drive a SMART and its by far the cheapest way vs bus/taxi/train.

£20 for food a month - its quite possible, especially if AXE is not minded or able to default on all debts and take the resultant harassment.

So for those of you IN a job, offer thanks to your chosen gods and pray to them that you DON'T lose it anytime soon - because your hosed if you do. And spare at least a moment of pity for those of us without work who are paying with every last scrap of dignity for other peoples mistakes and inadequacies.

We didn't ask for it, we would do nearly anything to be not in this position and don't need people lecturing us and making us feel like skiving scum for what little cash we get from a system which I for one have paid tens of thousands into over the last two decades.

I personaly don't begrudge AXE having a least the outlet of cursing his fate here, you don't have to read it, you don't even have to belive it - but don't add salt to it by rubbing it in with some of the trite comments I have seen here.

Thank you and now over to the dancing bear.........

Thank you very much for that. I'm so pleased that someone else can affirm what I have said about AXE- and also confirm that he doesn't have two heads or something.
I'm sorry that you haven't found anything either - it sounds like you are high level, much like AXE, and the few jobs that there are are not to be found up there, unfortunately.

Good luck to both of you, and anyone else in that awful situation

I too have met AXE (at the same interview) and he also applied for a job that I too applied for prior to that. Neither of us got the job on that occasion either. As Firefly said, it's very much a buyers market at the moment and no matter how you sell yourself, if you don't fit the exact profile, then they can afford to turn you down.

It's frustrating that employers appear to be inviting candidates to interview, just to make up the numbers as well. I have a strong RM background and was interviewed for a job and turned down on the basis that I come from an RM background (incidentally, the same job the AXE didn't get also), so what's the point in dragging me up there in the first place if not to make up the numbers for a preselected candidate?
