Good luck with your new job. Be yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions if you're unsure about anything.

I personally prefer being called by my first name but school policy is surname. Outside school I don't mind if kids call me by my first name, as it doesn't matter in the scheme of things.

Good luck, take lots of notes. Expecialy for jobs you might only have to do every so often.

Out of interest where are you working?

Of course you have to get your colleagues hooked on EduGeek within the first couple of days too!

Also find out the disciplinary procedures and what role you have to play... this is very important because the kids WILL take the p*** otherwise. Start off firm and then relax with those that deserve a relaxed attitude - it is far harder to go from being relaxed to firm.

Good point from Ric_, find out where you stand on staff/pupils discipline. You dont want to be telling kids/staff off and find out it's not your job. You need to be able to have support from other staff, especailly teachers if you hand out detentions for example. It is much easier to relax a bit once people know you wont tolerate any misbehaving.

The key point is to identify what your limits are in your job. Find out procedures the school has in redards to discipline and how you are given tasks etc. Get everything written down so you can refer to it at a later date if needed. Most of all, enjoy it, its a new job so you will be learning new things.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Had my first day. Not bad really. Although my feet are killing. Mainly followed the main man around getting to know layout, imaging some machines, moving stuff about.

Ayaz - I'm glad it is going OK.
My main advice would be to definitely take LOTS of notes - I have a file both on paper and on the server containing info on how to do things. It is amazing how quickly you forget unless you do something every day

Here's a good tip, something I've just put in place here. A in-house wiki. All your network/server/user/howto/top-tip documentation in one handy searchable place that any member of the team can use and edit.

Whenever we do something new, we put in the wiki for future reference. Buy a new machine - put the details in the wiki, New supplier - you guessed it, the details go in the wiki.

Especially good as a virtual machine!

If you don't know the staff members name you called always just call them Sir/Miss that's what I do whenever I am in a classroom with students about.
