The extra money that teachers get paid is often down to TLRs (Teaching and Learning Responsibilities). Gone are the old management points and in are additional monies that a school pays to teachers based on responsibilities that they have that impact on T&L ...

For support staff it is hard to equate thiss. In reality we are not looking at a single job description for NM ... we are looking at 2 or 3 that stretch over different scales. Those with minimal knowledge and responsibility go to the bottom, the cream rise to the top.

Also, this can help those who have not got the plethora of certifications but a heck of a lot of experience. They work just as hard as the certified folk. In fact I am told on a regular basis I should be certified.

Schools will still have the power to decide where you job fits, but it also gets around schools calling someone who does not do the work of a network manager being called one. t may be that people get down graded because they truly are, in reality, doing less work that others.

The main bone of contention is that they will move more people down than they will up, but there have been threads about that in the past.

So idea is single pay scheme is so that people applying to trust school for example can see if wage on offer is good wage or a bad wage and to stop under paying staff.

Yes, russell, and that is my point - if schools only offered min wage, for example, then teachers wouldn't go there and things would have to change
And as I say - they are either independent businesses, or they arent!

Schools are dual personality - they pay teachers on a nationally agreed rate because they have to, I'm sure some teachers would work for less if offerred, just as we do. With support staff, schools can pay as little as they can get away with.

What seems clear to me is, that schools (I'm sure they're not the only ones) will try to get away with doing as little as possible, unless they're forced.

I never liked single status as to many people end up underpaid due to it at least thats how it looks in the midlands and the new pay schemes.
