Hey, don't shoot the messenger, i just work here, i'm not responsible for salaries! Not a very helpful comment really though, was it...?

I know what I'd much rather be doing mind; money isn't everything.

Ringmer is a fantastic place to work, and for someone looking to break into IT, this is an ideal opportunity.

If the salary is no good to you, then look elsewhere - simple really.

We are soon having a new 6th Form college built which is going to have a whole raft of new technologies new to the college in it, from brand new Apple machines, to a complete TV studio set up and everything in between.

This is a brilliant opportunity to come and join certainly one of the best working environments I've ever worked in, and with some of the nicest people i've ever worked with, and with a LOT of years in corporate IT under my belt, be assured I'm not telling porkies!

FYI, the 'senior' ICT Technicians are on better packages than the junior roles so there is room for improvement/promotion if the opportunity arises. Not that it is likely too... much too nice a place to work for there to be regular staff turnover.

This position only became vacant because the previous holder is now doing a GTP to train as an ICT Teacher, so it's not as if they left over the conditions or pay.

Oh, did i mention we are also getting to move into a nice big new office in the not too distant future, instead of being crammed into the storeroom which so many IT depts put up with

Perhaps I'm just in a bad mood today, but that pay is disgustingly low for what the job entails.

Perhaps the person who kindly asked you to post on here should look at some of the other adverts first. The first being 2 down from this one.

Check out the IT Technician one there.

Sorry, but I'm really getting sick of seeing people being paid peanuts for a professional job.

Re: ICT Technical Assistant - Ringmer, East Sussex

I think at the end of the day, it is a junior role, but one that should lead to a good career, and the money reflects this. I assume they are not going to be expeting a huge amount from the candidates initially, but this would be an ideal way to develop skills, - education IT is one of the few areas where you do not need to specialise - my day to day role can include everything from server support, managing staff, front line support, wiring network sockets, to helping with stage lighting. There aren't many other jobs where you can gain that range of experience.

If whoever gets the job is still on similar money after a year or 2, then yes, its badly paid, and chances are they will move on. - This is usual wherever you work, unless you have a very good employer, the only way to move from "junior" money to a reasonably salary is to move elsewhere.

I started on £10k 6 years ago straight out of school, i'm now working as a network manager with 2 members of staff supporting 4 schools, and earning considerably more than that!

For an enthusiastic school leaver, who has some experience of IT support, I think its an ideal job, and reasonable money. All depends what they are expecting from the candidate really.

We had over 25 application previously but didn't appoint anyone as despite the somewhat low salary, we do have certain expectations of who we desire to work with.

You can't get a mortgage on minimum wage, full stop. The problem isn't exclusive.

Sorry, i'm not prepared to divulge my earnings in a public forum. It isn't as good as some, but better than others, and is better than the junior techs role, naturally.

Amazing. So you are asking for someone to be trained and experienced to start with, paid peanuts and also very little chance of promotion.

It might be low for what the job description suggests, but you and I both know how 'beefed' up job descriptions can be...

For the job on offer, it is a reasonable package. It isn't demanding work, and will give someone a real and proper break into IT. Please do not lose sight of the fact that this is a technical assistants job, and thus it is a junior role.

Like i say, if it doesn't interest, then don't look, it really is simple, regardless of your views on how much people should be paid.

I asked if I could post it on here, simply because I am keen for us to get someone in, as I am covering their workload at present, and my wages aren't fantastic enough for me to do that long term!

Myself and my line manager are both VERY aware of the salary levels, but we don't control budgets, and have to the best we can with what we are given. It's a thankless task sometimes, but, and certainly in this college, the good far outweigh the bad.

If the job pay was that bad, why did we get in excess of 25 applicants previously, none of whom were appointed incidentally, and have thus far received 5 applications for this post?

Re: ICT Technical Assistant - Ringmer, East Sussex

I face this problem each year with our placement student. It is low wage and they stay with us for 14 months before going back to Uni. They could earn far more in a commercial enterprise but the broad range of experience is better with us.

The expectations we have are to do with personal skills ... good communicator, etc ... they also have to be able to learn how to fault find without looking at a script.

You will be surprised how many people apply each year who have no common sense and poor work ethics.

We have been lucky though and managed to get a good person each year and I wish I could keep them on.
