Schools Technical Support Officer reporting to Schools Senior Technical Support Officer required
PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTION
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment as part of a newly created and vibrant Education focussed ICT team. The post holder will be expected to support a number of schools ICT networks, and be a focal point for communication, advice and solutions for these clients.
The job holder will also be required to work in conjunction with colleagues within the business unit on ICT project work. It goes without saying that the ICT Technician will, as part of a small and highly professional team, be expected to work using their own initiative.
Main duties and responsibilities
Assist in the support and development of Education ICT Technical Services in order to provide a comprehensive ICT support service to schools covering the installation, configuration and support of Administrative and/or Curriculum ICT systems as needed.
Diagnose and resolve technical problems and incidents via the telephone, remote diagnostic software or site visits in accordance with Education ICT standards and current working practices, to ensure a responsive service to schools in line with SLA performance targets.
Perform advanced repairs, installations or upgrades to PC hardware and software using, where appropriate, a range of software tools and techniques (e.g. imaging/remote software distribution) to ensure any changes cause minimum disruption and follow agreed standards.
Test hardware and/or software installations, using supplied test procedures and tools to ensure that modifications/changes have been successfully installed and/or removed.
Assist in the receipt/delivery of orders ensuring goods are securely stored.
Maintain a good technical knowledge of ICT software including SIMS MIS and Microsoft Office.
Maintain a good technical knowledge of ICT hardware configurations for desktop and server platforms.
Promote the use of the website and intranet across the organisation.
Ensure the inclusion of controls and procedures to maintain the security, privacy and confidentiality of data in all systems.
Advise other members of the IT Team on the most efficient way to run application systems and on the security/recovery requirements of each operational system ie Exchange Server or SIMS MIS.
Undertake error corrections, testing of new application releases and enhancements for bespoke and packaged systems on behalf of clients and maintain contact with appropriate suppliers as necessary.
Undertake the implementation and maintenance of computer application systems in compliance with client requirements, changes in government legislation or LA directives.
Keep abreast of, and conversant with, all relevant legislation, technological developments and techniques in the education sector.
Undertake any other duties as may be required from time to time commensurate with the grading of the post.
Degree in IT, together with at least three years of directly relevant post-qualification experience in the education sector.
MCSA, CCNA or other industry recognised qualification.
In depth ICT knowledge, practical experience and support of:
o Server, Desktop, Laptop and Network hardware.
o Windows client Operating Systems: Windows 2000 and Windows XP (Windows Vista would be beneficial).
o Windows Server Operating Systems: Windows 2000 and/or 2003.
o Microsoft Active Directory Services.
Experience of installing and de-installing end-user application software, such as Microsoft Office, Anti Virus, SIMS and other education software.
Experience of supporting end users in the use of business application software including Microsoft Office.
Produce quality documentation for new and existing applications from supplied specifications, in accordance with agreed standards for internal and external users.
Produce test procedures for new hardware/software implementations.
Prior experience of working within the education sector.
In addition to above one of the following:
In depth knowledge of the installation, configuration and support of CAPITA SIMS MIS, including the deployment of SOLUS updates and SIMS technical troubleshooting.
In depth knowledge of the installation, configuration and support of Microsoft Exchange Server 2003/2007.
Practical experience of installing, configuring and supporting Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005.
Practical experience of installing, configuring and supporting third party back up solutions
ie Veritas Backup Exec.
Creating software packages and imaging solutions.
Experience of writing script using Visual Basic or other scripting languages.
Prior experience of installing and configuring wireless technologies.

Excellent people skills and in particular a confident and pleasant telephone manner.
Problem solving and decision making skills.
Strong organisational and administrative skills with attention to detail.
Ability to communicate with clients who do not have an IT background.
Proactive, flexible approach with a professional attitude pursuant to the demands of the business.
Capable of mentoring less experienced technicians.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Salary: £25,000 - £30,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
Hours of Work: This post is full time. Contracted hours are 37 per week, with arrangements for lunch and start/finish times to be agreed in line with work schedule. Operate a flexible working scheme; however the appointee is expected to work the hours necessary to fulfil the demands of the post.
Holidays: 25 days per annum.
Travel: A full driving licence is essential. Access to own vehicle insured for business purposes is required.
Expenses: All expenses incurred during the course of business activities will be paid in line with Group policies.
