    iPad's and the App Store

    Hi

We recently bought 6 iPad's to trial in school, but we have a problem in that, when we go to the App Store on the iPad's, choose an app, press install, it as asks for the Apple ID password, then returns to the home screen, to start the download, but then comes up with the messages, "Cannot connect to iTunes Store, OK"

We have tried various Wifi points in the school, different levels on Encryption, but it wont download anything, browsing the Web is fine, receiving mail is fine. The iPad's and App Store work's at home no problem.

We can browse and download apps via iTunes on a Macbook fine then Sync them to the iPads. iPhones and iPod Touches seem fine also within school. It is just the iPads the won't download apps.

I was just wondering if anyone has had this problem we are on EMBC.

We trialled an iPad in school behind the BGFL firewall and think the problem is down to Proxys.

You can specify which proxy to use on the iPad for port 80, however many things use other ports and there fore it can't negotiate around the proxy. Have you tried it at home to see if it works on a "normal" internet connection?

Hopefully this will be fixed in a software update because it wouldn't even let us stream videos of any kind...

    Hi

Yeah, tried at home works fine. Yeah, we can't stream videos from Youtube either, but we can use iPlayer and TVcatchup. It's just strange that the iPhones and iPod Touches work fine.

As tricky Dicky has already said it is down to the proxy's. We manage to get everything working except for the streaming the Youtube videos. If anyone manages to sort this please post how.
Karl5 i presume that the iPad allows you to search around the itunes store ok?

    Hi,

I know what you mean, the iPhones work fine for the streaming here as well. I suppose it's just a new piece of software and they have overlooked the problem. Don't know how you log a service request with Apple but it would be worth doing.

How are you getting on with the iPads in school otherwise though? Are the children/teachers liking them and actually finding them useful instead of just a gimic?

Hi Karl ... just as an idea if you have the embc proxies set, what happens if you go onto the EMBC website and login first? Use a test EMBC account and change the filter level from 4 to 3, then 2 then 1 and then adult ...

I've called Apple they sent me a Support article with all the ports Itunes use, called EMBC our ISP, they said they don't support them.

Haven't handed them out yet, going to Staff next week to try.

Can't do that as get, "Cannot Open Page, Safari cannot open the page. The Error was:"There was a problem communicating with the secure web proxy server (HTTPS).".

AIUI although iOS lets you specify a proxy per connection, it's only used by some apps, transparent proxy is probably the only way
