Because knoppix runs "live" (i.e. from the CD) I have always copied files I need to backup to either a network share or external drive- say a HDD or memory stick; then I put them onto CD using a different machine.

I was thinking that..copy to network.
I was rescuing a standalone laptop - so the network wasn't available - only one CD and it choked on my pen drive. I'm suer I managed to do this on an earlier releasse of Knoppix though... perhaps I was just lucky.
On boot CDs - the SuperAIO disk that does the rounds on the internet is very useful (if highly illegal) - with copies of nearly all useful repair stuff on it from Ghost, Partition Magic etc to Adaware and Spybot
I recently used Bart PE with the Drive Image XML plugin from Runtime Software (free) to restore a server from a Drive Image XML backup stored on another network computer. Worked a treat!
