I'm currently living away from home and having to put up with povish cable broadband rather than my ADSL connection. This means that I can't use my ISP's SMTP server and so I couldn't send mail without using webmail... until now.
In the free mobile computing mag that came with PC Pro was a little piece on a piece of software called PostCast Server which is a little SMTP server that runs on your PC to send your email for you.

Be very careful of it. Check what headers it sends out. This app, like many other personal email servers, can get the IP address you are using blacklisted by RBL ooooohhh so quickly.
Most ISPs do not like you running your own personal mail server and will block it very quickly incase you are a spammer.
It took me 6 weeks to get NTL to agree that I am perfectly capable of hosting my own servers for a variety of things ... and even now I get the occasional phone call questioning my activity.

I found that you can edit the headers sent with the mail so that no personal info (IP, etc.) are sent out. Besides, the naff Telewest broadband uses DHCP anyway.
We'll see how I get on - I'll let you know

Naff telewest broadband? whats wrong with telewest? lol
Ive had telewest for years and ive never had any major probs with them (a few small outages but thats the norm)
btw, it may be DHCP, but if u dont turn your cable modem off your IP wont change, ive had mine for 14 months now

I can only compare Telewest with what else I have used -Eclipse ADSL on the main (admittadly one of the fastest and most reliable ISPs according to ADSLGUIDE.ORG.UK) but I have a few outages, ridiculously slow connection (especially uploads!)
Anyway - off topic and it may get better when they do the free upgrade to 2Mbps.

ISP is irrelevant to me. I've got Authenticated SMTP as part of my hosting plan with 1and1. No more changing e-mail address if I change service provider!

Seem to be starting in the north and working down. Scotland/NE is mostly done for example.
