I've found setting up vnc on relatives machines for instant support to be fine in most cases, as auto updates doesn't get hosed that often

Yeah, but with PSI they don't call me to update apps - they are walked through doing it themselves. I don't mind helping my parents / sister, but everyone else can use PSI or pay the going rate.
