right final question would people be willing/want to contribute a bank of courses. Tthis is community (read free) effort. So wouldn't get paid for it but get warm glowing feeling helping out your fellow techs

If you are interested then give me an email to discuss it more russell.dyas@gmail.com.

Russ, are you planning on something similar to those two guys who look like skinner and baddiel (minus the humour) with their introductory IT training vids ?

    lol

No completly different moodle based courses (yes of course can include video if person who created course wanted to).

Idea is free, containted, self study courses in a moodle install.

i like the format of the testout stuff, with videos, demonstations, notes, and then sims.

I think if people are able to create topics with all the above being open to them (maybe not sims!) then they'll be able to create great topics.

I think screen capturing is the way to go for any online training material.....much less embarassing than showing one's ugly mug in a training video while still providing an audio-visual experience to make learning easier and more interesting.

It's a great way to learn a new application and becuase it can be produced in flash video format you can embed it into practically any application. Within a Moodle context, you can provide links and text running alongside the screencast to create a true CBT experience.

    Hi

I like the idea of screen capturing - much easier to pickup for the Visual learners out there rather then the over burdening of text.

I had a great experience with my MCSA training - it was a mixture of straight reading material (online, but printable, from oreilly and others), screen captured demos with some powerpoint, live virtual machine sessions (you can get these for free on MS's site if you look around), timed tests and possibly one other element which I forget now.

The whole thing was tied together with a nice flash-based timeline showing you where you needed to be day-by-day and what you'd achieved. I guess it was a kind of specialised VLE really. Obviously Moodle is going to be the preferred choice of VLE here, but I think it's important not to miss out tests at the end of each module as they really do help.

One other thing which might be helpful for some is podcasts - perhaps just podcast versions of the reading material.
