Basic training topics for new staff

    Hi guys

Im trying to help someone create a short course for techs in primary schools. Most of the people taking part will be i.t savvy lsa's/ or people with little previous knowledge but have the responsibility of looking after the day to day runnings of a ict within primary's.

If you could list a few key things for me that would be great. Im thinking along the lines of

    Understanding permissions
    Backup
    Basic maintenance/troubleshooting of pcs.
understanding of how networks are put together

    any ideas/links would be great

Advice I used to give all my new techies!

    1. Google is your friend!
    2. If it aint broke..... don't fix it
    3. If it is broke and you find a solution using your friend... don't fix it unless you tell me first.

Re: Basic training topics for new staff

The things I'd focus on are the basics, as if they understand those, then they can build on that knowledges through experience.

    I'd focus on things like;

    1. Basic understanding of Networks, how to plug together switches and troubleshoot simple cabling faults etc.

    2. Active Directory/user management basics, what the default groups and accounts do, and how to create new users, delete users, change passwords, check group memberships etc.

    3. Folder permissions and sharing permissions explained, and best practice on using these.

    4. Backups, why they're important, the basics of checking the backup is working and good practice like reknewing the tapes regulalry etc.

    5. General maintenance and troubleshooting of PCs (and Servers) common errors and what they mean, and preventative maintenance that can be done.

I just listed these off the top of my head. It's difficult putting together courses like this without going either over complex or over simplefied.

    Mike.
