Actually, instead of the flash based SparkWeb, maybe it would be possible to use one of these and have inbuilt chat (like Facebook / LCS)? Possibly with online settings (for chat) next to each user?

    Ajaxbber - Jabber web client
a little bit of zeank JWChat

I've had a play with pretty much all the web based jabber clients, and I would have to say that most of them are unstable and buggy. JWChat particularly so. SparkWeb will probably be a better choice really.

Sparkweb is pretty unstable and I have been watching it for over a year now (and did some coding with it too)
Half the problem has been openfire having its own http issues and bugs as well as sparkwebs issues but I am hoping it will get better soon.
The others had issues too like Local said.
I will take a gander at the ajax one though, not seen it before.
