Hi,
Are there any would be php programmers here that would be willing to contribute time to help code an open source school information management system (OpenSIMS)?
The OpenSIMS project is bringing together the creators of other open source MIS to help plan the requirements and functions of a single open source os independent school mis.
please join the discussion at Schoolforge-UK MIAS | Google Groups or help expand the wiki at Main Page - OpenSIMS

Hi Webman,
I'm just looking for people at the mo, as the database relationships are still being talked about so no firm start date yet.
Have you ever used cakephp framework?
Thanks Ian

I have seen it and played about with it over a year ago, but currently use Code Igniter. I can't see it being too much of an obstacle.

C# and Java, about 70:30, so I'm more a desktop programmer than anything else. Do let me know if I can be of help though.

Hi Bizzle,
Your input can be of great help, even if it's "why are you doing that?" or "this could be a better way?"
Are you working in education at the mo?
Ian

10th April 2008, 12:05 PM #11 I'd be willing to take a nose, as I have a few things I have to code for myself anyway (which should be included in such a system).
One question, isn't SIMS a trademark of Capita? So, having 'Open SIMS' would be a trademark infringement I believe.

10th April 2008, 12:12 PM #12 Looking at the Google Groups, OpenSIMS doesn't seem to be the final name that has been decided on.

It could but doubt it as there is a precedent with Exchange and OpenExchange (I'm no legal expert). There is also another project called openSIMS (The Open Source Security Infrastructure Management System) they would also need to sue them.
The name is not fixed i only coined it OpenSIMS as most people in education have heard of SIMS and when wanted to create an open source version.

10th April 2008, 12:27 PM #14 I think OpenSIMS in this context of education could become under fire from legal action from Capita, and lose, due to it being a similar product in the same sector/market.
