Hi,
Should I be able to use live@edu SMTP server settings for email notifications from stuff such as WSUS, Backups, file servers etc?
If yes, how?
For example I'm trying to set up WSUS email report notifications and I've entered the SMTP server settings provided to me from outlook.com, but when I test the settings in WSUS it fails.
Is this not possible with live@edu or am I doing something wrong?

I think when you use WSUS to forward email it doesn't attempt to use auth which I think is where the problem lies. You would need to setup some sort of mail relay which will take the Unauthed email and forward it using auth to live@edu
In the SMTP settings on WSUS there is a section for SMTP login server authentication where you can enter a login and password. Is this what you mean? I tried entering my email and and password which is an admin in live@edu but it still didnt work.Quote:

Are you specifying TLS encryption in the SMTP details?
You need to specify the right port as well by default it will use 25. - Off the top of my head its 587
There is no TLS box.

I'm entering the SMTP server settings that it gives me in my live@edu account
Server name: pod51015.outlook.com
Port: 587
Encryption method: TLS
try telnet pod51015.outlook.com 587 and see if you get a response
Are those the settings you use in outlook?

I will take a look.
I presume outlook is using Mapi connection on port 135 or 443 (i think). You may need to either open port 587 out on your firewall or ask the LEA to allow it out.

I was looking yesterday and stumbled across this thread but then found this solution that worked for us.

There are lots of web forms that don't support TLS authentication over SMTP unfortunately.
You will usually have to setup your own SMTP server on the internal network that works on Port 25 without authentication.
