Office 365 Message Trace
So it has finally happened. One of our students has (apparently) sent a nasty email to another student. I have found the message log in Exchange> Mail Flow> Message Trace and can see the subject and delivery status. Is there a way of viewing the contents of the message without logging into the mailbox directly? I have a feeling that this could be a reoccurring theme for a couple of weeks until the message gets through to the students that we can actually trace what they do.
Well there was a script posted here previously that will scan the mail boxes and copy the e-mails to a location of your choosing.
As part of our AUP, users are notified that their work and e-mails should not be expected to be private and can be accessed by IT support staff. If an instance occurs where an e-mail has been sent that is deemed to be against any of the school policies, we will assign our Admin account access to the offending mail box (after checking message trace) and gather the evidence required.
You could setup a mail rule to create a copy of all sent messages from students into another account for review, but that might be overkill.
If you know the mailbox probably the quickest and easiest way for you to do this is to give an admin account permissions to that mailbox and then switch mailboxes in OWA, other than that there is a powershell script which i posted in another thread that will search and copy across emails with the relevant content.
Thanks for that, I will have another search for the script. We are fully covered on the AUP front but I just suspect that some still think that there is no way we can actually trace it. I think the archive of messages sent may be too much but it is an option if they can't behave. I have already spoken to the head of ICT teaching and the esafety officer and I believe they are going to bring it up during assemblies too.
We are lucky here with the general standard of our student behaviour.
