Fixed this with the help of google,
for anyone else wanting this, you need to go to the control panel, click company profile, click profile - scroll down to new user features and select rapid release.

Have you looked in Spreadsheets? We are on Rapid Release and the menu is there in documents but not in spreadsheets.

It's not in spreadsheets no, but then again it isn't on my personal account either, are the addons just for docs at the mo ?

The announcement definitely says it's for Sheets as well: Google Drive Blog: Bring a little something extra to Docs and Sheets with add-ons

Hilariously I have just discovered that if you use the link in the announcement (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/create?addon_store) it will open a spreadsheet with the Add-Ons menu visible, but the menu vanishes again as soon as you close and re-open the sheet, and doesn't appear for existing sheets. Good old Google, testing really isn't their cup of tea, is it?

The person I spoke with at google also said to me this might not be compatible with older docs, advised cutting and pasting if that's the case.... Oh well at least its free
*edit* just tried what you suggested and the addons menu stuck okay for the sheet, maybe its just because it's still being rolled out ?
