Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

    lol very familiar...

I dont have anything to do with training the staff or deciding out-right on pruchases but everything else pretty much I do.

    I like this:

The coordination of ICT demands a considerable range of expertise, requiring good ICT understanding and knowledge, technical skills and the ability to provide professional support.
No offense to him but if it isn't office or SIMS, he doesn't have a clue - regarding anything. He was wondering what I was doing yesterday - I said making a patch cable up. He said that wont reach from the pc to the socket on the wall. I said its for the ports in the cabinet lol

He lovely tho (just in case he see's this :S)

    Cheers,
    Nath

Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

decided to go for more hol and reclassify job at network manager 1.

how many school weeks are there in a year 38... right get 4 weeks off a year so that is 42 weeks a year plus say a week for all the bank holidays so that is 43.

So if ask for two extra weeks that 45 weeks which leaves 7 holiday weeks where i work...

so question is asking for two weeks extra too much i am pushing it...

Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

Well things seem to be looking up for me. My title change and payrise have been approved and will be starting in September and if I reach the objectives / tasks / goals or whatever they set for me it will be going up again.

I've also been told that they want me to move out of the control of teachers and run the network with no interference from teaching staff :P . That means no more SMT telling me how to do my job hopefully. I've then got to delegate more jobs out to my tech. I like getting my hands dirty though.

I've also seen what's in the repair budget.... nearly £5K. So I've extracted some of the money for repairs and more Network Cameras in.

I'm in a better mood for it now.

Perhaps the SMT are moving towards the ICT strengths of the school. I hope so.

Keep pestering and proving that you are invaluable everyone, it seem's it payed off for me.

So will see fyi here is draft of my letter only first draft...

    ****************************************
As you know I have been here for nearly a year and half since starting the job the network and the job its self has expanded. When starting the job we had two servers and approximately 80 workstations. We now operate with 6 servers and over 120 workstations plus ADD NUMBER laptops.

Also I took on responsibility of gaining quotes and ordering equipment and stock and have saved school a large amount of money. As you are aware recently I just saved school around £1000 in support contracts of equipment we no longer own. Often when getting quotes I have saved the school money often saving large amounts.

As well as the work of Technician 1 such upgrading the hardware and software in the school, maintain records of the networks and general are responsible for day to day and running of the networks. I also ensure the all computers are available, software and various network connections are kept running and all the equipment is available for use. I provide assistance to staff and students and help develop student’s skills via classroom help and lunchtime clubs. As well as liaising with external companies in effect I have been a ‘Network Manager’ here.

Added to that we have also taken part in numerous pilot study’s from QCA KS3 ICT SAT Tests to piloting RM software. Just recently I have been approached by RM to start initial inquiries about getting the school involved RM User Panels which shows how much profile of the school has changed since I have started working here and considerable amount of time outside of work maintaining the profile of the school.

I have also taken upon myself to develop my personal knowledge by continuing my career development such taking the RM Certified Professional Course Level 1 exam with plan to do level 2 when it is realised, continued contact with other IT staff within schools. I am also looking to see if I can fund CISCO Networking course which is an industry standard training course. Also in next 12 months I plan on taking European Certification of IT Professionals as well.

I understand in climate that this school and education in general found themselves in especially in Leicestershire. Asking for any kind of pay rise above the county requirements is not an option and in end amount of pay is not a deciding factor.

At the moment I employed as a IT Technician 1 with 4 weeks paid holiday (plus bank holidays) off a year which can only be taken in school holidays.

The biggest factor to me is being recognised for the job and profession I do which is why I am formally asking the school to consider increasing my amount of paid holiday by an extra week and that my job title is changed to Network Manager 1 but for my pay grade to remain at its current level.

I also understand if this has to be done as part of a formal pay and work review and if this is the case I request a meeting with you for this to take place. I enjoy working here and with the staff and students all I am asking is for the work I am doing to be recognised.

    Yours sincerely

    Russell Dyas

Yeah, we've got three running on an old server with 2003 installed. They are the D-Link 2100+ IP Cameras.

The software that comes with them is very simple to use. The advantage of these cameras are:-

1:- The price. You can pick them up for £150 at various places.
    2:- Wireless or Wired connections.
3:- Motion Sensors built into them.
    4:- Sound is also recorded.
5:- They can be viewed from any web browser by typing in the IP Address.
6:- They can be mounted anywhere.
7:- Full colour, and auto brightness adjust.
8:- Funny as hell as the students first see them.

The only thing it can't do is be moved by the user. They are static.

    Highly recommened.

Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

    And in reply to RussDev

    ******************************************
    Dear Committee,

I am writing to request if the Personnel and Pay Review Committee would be willing to review my level of pay within the school.

I am currently employed by the school as the Network Manager / ICT Technician on Scale 5.

The role of Network Manager / ICT Technician involves many duties, but the main being :

    1. Maintenance of the school network. This includes all PC Systems, Laptops, Printers (where possible) and Network Problems.
    2. Cleaning of peripherals.
    3. Examine and resolving software problems.
    4. Examining and procuring software requirements.
    5. Finding the best price and then requisitioning ICT related products for use within the school community.
    6. Upgrading Laptops and PC Systems when deemed necessary.
    7. Keeping abreast of current ICT uses and trends.
    8. Training staff when required in the use of the ICT equipment and software.
    9. Managing members of staff and contractors for ICT repairs.
    10. Managing the department budget efficiently and cost effectively.
    11. Updating and rebuilding the Electrical Testing Database and the ICT Equipment Database.

As you can appreciate, this role has snowballed since I was first awarded the position. The amount of computers alone in the school has nearly quadrupled and I am also now managing the ICT Technician.

Over the past twelve months I have also achieved the following to the benefit of the school and its staff and pupils:

    1. Supervised the installation of a new fibre optic network backbone on the school premises.
    2. Manager and supervised the installation of two new primary servers.
    3. Successfully converted the previous server into a dedicated printer server for the school.
    4. Re-allocated an older server into a network security camera server.
    5. Supervised the updating and re-allocation of the older PC systems into new areas.
    6. Updated the security on the school network and classrooms to try and alleviate damage.
    7. Successfully re-configured the ‘StopIt’ software to monitor and reduce the amount of printing and paper wastage saving the department resources and money.
    8. Implemented the ‘Web Marshal’ server to reduce the amount of time wasted in classrooms by students who constantly surf the web. This has also nearly 100% removed the access to undesired web sites.
    9. Given control to teachers to control either the whole rooms PC’s or an individuals PC. This has also reduced the students tendency to ‘play’ or ‘abuse’ the system.
    10. Re-configured all teaching staff’s laptops to run on the new system.
    11. Planning, testing and installation of a new internal e-mail system, which is still in progress.

Looking at the LEA’s Workforce Remodelling document, I believe I should be on the linked SO2 / SO3 grading. I do know that this is not going to be possible due to the school having a falling role in the community. Due to this I would appreciate if the Personnel and Pay Review Committee would look at increasing my pay scale to Scale 6 or SO1.

I have also included the brief descriptions of my linked job titles.

Many thanks for letting me take up your time with this issue.

If you are monitoring students, do you require their agreement? I appreciate that monitoring corridors and school premises is performed by a security system; but, does the use of cameras in rooms for non-security staff pose an invasion of privacy issue?

Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

Be mindful of RIPA. If you haven't already, you should write something into your AUP documents explaining that computer usage will be monitored and by agreeing to said AUP they are agreeing to be monitored. This needs to cover anyone using the computers not just pupils.

This doesn't have to be IP cameras of course, something as economical as VNC can be used as a monitoring device.

Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

Thanks for the heads up Keith and Geoff. Good point. I will go back and check the AUP documentation for the school.

Is is possible to get around it by using the cameras for monitoring the hardware in the rooms in the mean time.

I'm just scanning through the RIPA website at the moment.
