Our school is claiming no money for pay rises as well. I've just had my pay review and not holding my breath.

I've got 350+ PC's, 60 Laptops, 900+ students and a sixth form. I've also got to look after the Adult Education lot, and all the host of other bits we get to look after. I'm a Network Manager and I've got a Technician with me 50% of term time, the other half he is a treaching assistant.

My pay does not look too bad at all compared to some of the others. I still think we are worth far more to the schools. Perhaps we just need a month on strike to prove our worth?? hehe

Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

The problem is that teaching staff begin to get up in arms when school staff begin to earn more than them, but things are beginning to change now, albeit slowly. Most schools have twigged on that you cannot employ an IT bod on a low wage for very long before they get poached (usually by the NHS around here) and move on after a year or so.

That's it I think Dos_Box - before me our school never kept anyone longer than a year. Terrible for continuity.

A neighbouring school [well - 60 miles away ] started employing students from the neighbouring University [Aber - 100 miles away LOL [cracking myself up here - sorry!}} on a year out basis - one neatly handing over to the next. They found the service they were getting was terrible - so now they're advertising for a regular full time tech.. Some poor sucker to pick up the pieces then!

The school here has no money as school is in debt..

When you compare my wages in same area pretty good hence why at moment not moved but I think what will do is try and get more holiday (on 4 weeks temoted to go for 6 weeks a year) and see if can get title of job changed to network manager (as that is what i am doing anyway might as well have title and it means if school gets nmore money in position to ask for payrise)

Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

Thats a good tip actuall. When I first started a guy who is very knowlegable told me to get my job title changed from technician to network manager before I signed the contract as technicinas wages were capped and network managers were not.

Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

Same here - my 'knowledgeable friend' [the IT CoOrd.] advised me to ditch technician and adopt Network Admin. [he wanted Network Manager for himself - but they're taking that off him now anyway - not that he ever was officially 'it']. People can use 'technician' as almost an insult - they think the title is so lowly.

I suspect tho' that they'll keep the status quo - me actual Network Manager [I really do do everything except having the resonsibility/pay], and the Head taking the responsibility.

Can they do that? My head has very little IT knowledge and no-one else could even start to do the job. I suspect that's what happens in many schools - someone in the SMT takes on the role Network Manager without any knowledge of the job at all [sounds like the government].

So the head goes to the firing squad if you screw up? Sounds a good deal to me.

Many ITCo-ords' adopt the title as they get extra money for it, regardless if their knowlege stopped around the BBC B era. It still goes on that the IT Co-ord adopt job specs that they are not capable of fulfilling in the knowlege that their techies (and yes, I agree that the title 'technician' is used belittleingly in many cases by some staff) will cover for their lack of competance.

Re: How much do you earn and in what post?

hehe I love this forum. I bet we are all sitting there reading the threads nodding and laughing in agreement continually lol

As a few people have been made redundant - one support staff, one nta, couple of part time teachers - I doubt I should ask for more money. It would be a tad checky lol :S

I'll just wait for the Job Evaluation thing to come into powys properly... although it could be a long wait tho wish they'd hurry up lol

Is there a job title that covers doing everything except taking the responsibility? If there is, then thats me.

The ICT Co-ord here asked me a while back whether I'd like to take on the ICT Co-ord job (more a few thou more) - not sure whether its a good idea to now or not - any ideas? I think more then anything, it'll be shifting of blame to me if/when things go wrong

    Ta,
    Nath
