    Re: Network Book, Hardware Books

Networking: Computer Networks by Andrew S. Tanenbaum. Judging by the second-hand prices (£20-odd) listed on Amazon.co.uk, the fourth edition is the most recent and still the standard networking text for many introductory computer science courses. It'll be good practice at reading large chunks of text, if nothing else.

Computer hardware: what about it do you want to learn? On the more theoretical side, Computer Architecture (3rd edition): A Quantitative Approach by Hennessy & Patterson is good but a beast of a read (800 pages, without counting the appendacies). Your money might be better off being spent elsewhere. A magazine subscription might be an idea, something like PC Plus maybe. Bits of old computers are always worth getting - even stuff 3 or 5 years old is perfectly useable, and available dead cheap (or even free). Hmm, are you old enough to have a PayPal account? - you could ask people to pay into that as your Christmas present, then use it to buy stuff off eBay.

Lots of hardware information is available for free on sites like Wikipedia. If you get a bunch of old hardware, then look up on the Internet how to stick it all together, that you get you started. If you're more interested in good old-fashioned electronics, then somewhere like Maplins do a very good catalouge (that you have to pay for, mind).

I'll second the Upgrade for SP1 and R2, got that here on my shelf, very good, also recomend the MS Press Windows Vista Inside Out book as lets be honest you will be needing it sooner rather than later.
