Second Life?
Hi there,
I'm just wondering if many edugeek members use second life? Has anybody found any useful work-related resources? I've heard there is a UK Education Island with an NAACE virtual lounge although I've yet to visit it! I think second life could be a good opportunity to put together a collection of resources and interest groups and I can see a real benefit in attending conferences and meetings in second life - would save time, money and there's the 'green' benefit! Are there any plans to give edugeek a home on second life?

The problem I have is what can be done there that can't be done easier or more open with current tools all ready available. Also can you filter the more interesting aspects of SL like you can the web.
Plus from what I hear if you were to get too many people turning up to the conference or resource it would crawl to a halt or get laggy.

Personally, I would rather stab both my eyeballs repeatedly with a SATA cable than set a virtual foot in second life

We need an edugeek hall of quotes for this sort of thing!
A section of the site, where a quote is voted in weekly etc?
The kids threw a wobbly here when habbo hotel was filtered.

Personally I don't see the big fascination with Second Life. I'm with Jake on this one

Not to be too generic, but from most of the news i've heard and magazine articles etc, the main emphasis of second life appears to be sex etc....

Me too, it does seem like a lot of PR guff has shot it to the forefront so it seems like the 'Next Big Thing©®' I also have to chuckle that they quote member numbers of 15 squillion but when you ever look at the counter on their website it normally reads a few thousand at anyone time if that!
A friend has a great sig that says somethign along the lines of "You don't have much of a first life so why would I want to interact with you in your Second Life"

haha brilliant - Don't sit on the fence there Jake!
I've only used it a couple of time and it has crashed on me once or twice due to hardware acceleration issues which I can't get round without turning it off (v annoying) but I didn't find the experience that offensive and I can think of lots of things that could work well in the environment... I've just yet to find many!

I know exactly what you mean, Jake ... who wants to spend after after hour in a virtual environment relying on a graphical interface to provide stimulation ...
Bring back MUD is what I say ...
