Maybe phones etc are good, but kids just can't be trusted to use them responsibly for the intended purposes.
Web-based quiz to encourage the pupils to research some tricky questions. Our LEA have set one up for Christmas and it encourages a lot of kids (and staff!) to think hard and get looking for the answers if they don't know them.
Could do it on a smaller scale with the ActiVote systems for a class. Get them to think up a quiz show format and run it during a lesson.
The question may be will we need classrooms once the technology is available for any time anywhere learning. Australia has had classes taught by radio to remote locations for ages. So while I think that teachers will always been needed to enhance students learning I suspect at secondary level the theory of crowding loads of kids together for social control is unnecessary for learning. (ok maybe I taken blue skys a little far)
As for the near future
