48 Hous of non-support

Posted 11-07-2008 at 12:14 AM by Dos_Box
Its past midnight, and the EduGeek pixies have been beavering away to get us back up and running. I shall post more about exactly what went on later, but in the mean time I would like to thank all of you guys and gals for being patient, using the shoutbox, and for the ones who sent a mail to Fasthosts we've got something special lined up for you.
Thanks to Shaun (ZeroHour) for working his bits off contacting Fasthosts and generally being the best webmaster we could ever wish for.
Thanks...

Conf done, now on to the next bag of worries

Posted 01-06-2008 at 11:40 PM by Dos_Box
Well, now the conf is all done and everyone is left happy and content it just remains for me to worry about just how to pay for it!
Don't worry, we will have enough (eventually!), but, if you didn't know, Fasthosts decided to take a years worth of hosting out of our bank with no warning, yes, it was due for renwal (I though we had another 2 months and was going to cancel anyway), but it was galling that they didn't send a reminder email, and that the invoice\receipts was automatically sent...

Car breaking down on the way to work

Posted 25-04-2008 at 11:05 AM by Dos_Box
On the way to work this morning, couldn't change gear so had to pull over on the M61. Looks like I'll need a new clutch. Thank God for Green Flag cover, and a local garage that says it may be able to get it sorted by the end of play today. I've just recouped the annual GF costs in one incident!
I should have known that if I brought a second hand car with a towbar it may have been 'overworked' a bit.

When is a HDMI graphics card not HD?

Posted 13-04-2008 at 10:27 PM by Dos_Box

When it's not got HDCP (High Defintion Content Protection) as a feature on the chipset.
I recently upgraded my GeForce 7300 low profile HDMI graphics card for the newer 8500GS version from the same company (MSI NX8500GT MTD256EH). Once installed I could never get the BIOS or boot screens to show until Windows (Vista 32bit) had loaded up the drivers when connected via the HDMI interface.
After a little asking around and digging I had found that unless the card has HDCP onboard (as...

Journalism is hard work

Posted 18-03-2008 at 10:38 PM by Dos_Box
For those of you who didn't know (because I haven't told many of you) I am moonlighting as an IT journalist, in fact, if you buy the next edition of PC Advisor and look at the helpdesk section you should see my handsome mug looking back at you.
Its not all joy though, its pretty hard work, especially as I have to do it at night and some of the questions make our users look like veritable IT gods!

*sigh*
