Maybe - but it was only yesterday 10.04.2014 a large number of schools were still experiencing problems. The firewall was installed December 2013.

It's not really surprising why people (quite rightly) are becoming very agitated with Link2ICT. The lease line offers us a high uptime of 99.9%, however BGfL as the service provider are currently less than satisfactory. The communication is poor and no one unfortunately can explain what's happening, other than they're communicating with CheckPoint. That's great, but it doesn't help schools in the short term, typically taking weeks to investigate the logs it generates.

I'm just very conscious of the fact that the event will be used to promote 'what's coming down the line', rather than focusing on what lessons could be learnt from the past to the current day.

You also need to consider the bigger picture - every school's different and every school's got different requirements. That's the way it should be, yet it's still one big system at the core managing it all. It doesn't necessarily make logical sense to do things this way any more and many schools (again in their own right), want full ownership and control, yet Link2ICT don't necessarily (out of choice) want to offer it. A conflict of interest on the cards? Yes potentially, but this is why Link2ICT should give schools that choice.

I know I am not from Birmingham and so should not be sticking my nose in, but I have a suggestion. Why don't Link2ICT set up a public open blog that they can explain issues and downtimes on. Down here in Hertfordshire, our LEA has a blg which they have thoroughly updated, despite recent performance issues. The blog is at HICS | Hertfordshire Internet & Connectivity Services: Technical knowledge base
I am sure the LEA team would not mind this being used as an example.

Fantastic suggestion, but I'm speculating this wouldn't work if the whole system goes down? This is essentially what's been happening in Birmingham.

Thus could be used as a public record of service. Seeing as it is taxpayers money, then people deserve to know what service is being gotten for their money.

Even if it's not run by Link2ICT, something like a shared calendar would allow you all to keep an accurate diary of events/outages.
