    BETT 2010 Guides

In previous years there has been a guide or section of the site dedicated to the honest techie, to help you get the most out of BETT, to help you find the next big thing for your school, to give you ideas about your own work or to simply help you find good places for R&R or freebies.

This year has seen a variety of guides, websites, twitter hastags and blogs doing this so I thought I would start sticking a list of them in here. Some are teacher-centric, some are for the BETT novice, some are the veteran mug-snatcher ... but there should be something for everyone.

I will also be a roving reporter on Wednesday, hunting for good stories whilst enjoying a hassle free-BETT (yes ... I know I am pushing my luck about how nice it is to have a restful Christmas and New Year ... so spare a thought for DB and Ric who have worked wonders to give us all the best EG stand ever)

Remember to visit the EduGeek Technical Help Point if you find something interesting and report it in to a member of the stand staff, add a post on this thread, take some photos, perhaps even stick a video clip on YouTube ...

The next one to look at is BETT Show 2010 - Olympia London 13th - 16th January 2010 where you can see the #tips4bett and #bett2010 twitter streams. Also is a pad for sharing tips or items spotted at BETT.

If you've not read Merlin John's blog or previous articles before then you should stop by Merlin John Online :: Home.

The BETT2010 section already has a variety of articles and will be updated throughout the event. George Cole has already outlined a number of seminars for people to go to (yes, aimed at teachers / educationalists / managers mainly) but well worth having a look at. Press Releases

Throughout tomorrow I'll be highlighting a number of press releases and uploading video from various stands. After asking on twitter for the last few days it seems that people are interested in the future of netbooks / vs tablets (including things like eReaders), Learning Platforms (in particular interoperability and resources for assessment), Parental Engagement (from online reporting to txt alert systems), Wi-Fi and then lots of people said ... "Surprise me! I like gadgets!"

So I hope to cover a little bit of all of the above. Don't be scared to post your own views on what you have seen either.

    Furniture

Lets get down to the basic of things.

There are always a number of furniture suppliers at BETT and a growing number of companies who do more than just furniture ... they truly do design the classroom and the school around the educational needs of the school. Some even remember that you have to fit technology in and make it accessible to support!

For me BETT 2010 - ISIS are top notch for this and if you are looking for people with ideas to fit your school then I would stop by and say hello.
Other notable mentions are Bretford and Lapsafe for laptop / desktop security / storage and Confetti Constellations seem to be doing some interesting, bespoke design work.

As an extra mention I am pretty sure Russell Prue with be showing off his Broadcaster system, for a portable radio studio. I had the pleasure of seeing it in action in one of our primary schools and it really does do everything a radio station needs ... and then a bit more.

    IWBs

And yes ... I will be lumping information about IWBs in here too!

You can see the latest tools from both Promethean and SMART, as well as other IWB manufacturers, and associated software providers.

Promethean will be showing the latest versions of their software as well as talking about Promethean Planet, the world's largest IWB community. SMART will be demonstrating their latest products including the latest version of the SMARTtable as well as their wireless slate.

As always it is some of the smaller companies that have interesting items. For me it will be looking to see who is demonstrating the LiveScribe Pulse. I know it will be at BETT but not sure where yet ... so if you see it before me then let me know!

The disappearance of eLCs has meant that some of the smaller producers of resources have struggled, but BETT will always bring them out. This year keep an eye out in the software village for materials that can be used both on IWBs and learning platforms. Birchfield, boardworks and the National Digital Resource Bank are good places to start.

    Network Managers' Lounge

As well as the EduGeek.net Technical Help Point, this year also sees the introduction of the Network Managers' Lounge (upstairs in the walk through between the national hall gallery and the grand hall gallery). Here is a message from Steve Moss about it.

    BETT 2010: Future Learning Spaces (13 – 16 January 2010, Olympia)

I am writing to share with you our plans for BETT 2010. This year at BETT, Partnerships for Schools (PfS) will be hosting a new area called ‘Future Learning Spaces’. This space will include a Seminar Theatre, Local Authority Lounge, Network Managers Lounge, Interactive Learning Spaces and ‘info pods’ offering specialist information about ICT in BSF and other programmes.

BETT 2010 includes a number of PfS conference speakers including Steve Moss, Ged McClinton and Tim Byles who will be making a keynote on Friday 15th at 12.30pm. Tim will share his thoughts on BSF progress to date, and how the expanded role of PfS – which now includes the full suite of capital investment programmes – will enable PfS to have ‘one conversation’ with local authorities and the private sector going forward.

Daily Seminar Programme (attached below - Tony)
We have a great line up of content including panel discussions, debates and talks from local authorities, PfS staff and our sponsors on a wide range of subjects. Highlights include:
    · Sony: Media and Learning – Embracing the You Tube Generation
    · Atkins: Desktop Virtualisation in Education – From Bleeding Edge to Leading Edge
    · Lookred Solutions: Lend Lease, Impleo and lookred solutions have come together to create the Lend Lease Learning Space. This space provides a stimulating context for discussion about how this type of environment could support new and compelling ways of learning in the future
NCC: How Green IT can support innovation in BSF and save you money
    Meet Partnerships for Schools

BETT offers the opportunity to meet with PfS colleagues from across our programmes including specialists on education, ICT, PE& Sport and Arts & Culture, and Project Directors. If you would like to book a specific appointment to speak with a colleague from PfS, please contact alice.monks@partnershipsforschools.org.uk by 12th January 2010.

Ray has, once again, captured one of the important parts of BETT.

Feel free to spot items that can be added to his blog (and also on here)!
