Hi
We recently got involved in a company called Parador.
They offered a toner cartridge that was 7 or 8 times the capacity of the normal one.
And they offered a cleaning kit that turned out to be a cloth.
After talking to someone within our organisation, they offered to sent a trial. The next telephone call went along the lines of "is it ok to order this, you dont need an order do you". Said employee agreed to this and they sent the toner later with a 14 day return limit (which had expired as they sent it late).
We phoned them and told them we didnt want it and were going to return it. Using the return address on the box didnt help as the address was a fake.
After several more arguments, they sent us a recording of the phone call where the order was placed. It cost us 300 for a toner and cloth.
Do not deal with Parador (Google them as "Parador Scam" and you will see other people they have annoyed.
If they phone you, they may be recording you. Be warned.

11th November 2010, 12:51 PM #2 For a start, if they're recording the conversation without warning you first that they are recording, then it's illegal and can't be used as evidence.
Don't pay the bill, let them try to take you to court, which they won't as they know they're pulling a scam and would lose. Also, pass it on to your local Trading Standards officer.

11th November 2010, 12:53 PM #3 Oh dear. If an offer seems too good to be true, it is.
Genuine high cap toners will be the same number of pages as manufacturers versions. There's no way of making ink spread further and a physical limit to the actual volume of toner that will fit in the space available.
Don't believe any of these vendors who claim they'll get extremely high print volumes out of a toner.
EDIT
teejay's advice is good.
Call Trading Standards now.

11th November 2010, 12:56 PM #4 Doesn't appear to be illegal.
The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 in general prohibits interception of communications by a third party, with exceptions related to government agencies. A recording made by one party to a phone call or e-mail without notifying the other is not prohibited provided that the recording is for their own use; recording without notification is prohibited where some of the contents of the communication—a phone conversation or an e-mail—are made available to a third party. Businesses may record with the knowledge of their employees but without notifying the other party to
* provide evidence of a business transaction
* ensure that a business complies with regulatory procedures
* see that quality standards or targets are being met in the interests of national security
* prevent or detect crime to investigate the unauthorised use of a telecom system
* secure the effective operation of the telecommunications system.

Ok it's from wikipedia but I believe it to be correct.

11th November 2010, 01:13 PM #6 Stand corrected on the telephone thing. I would still be contacting trading standards and tbh woud still have a 'see you in court' response as the 14 day trial period needs to be from when they delivered the item, not some random order date.

11th November 2010, 01:25 PM #7 do they have another name i have tried to find there website with no joy ?
-
11th November 2010, 01:29 PM #8 They have no website, they use hotmail email addresses.
They also trade as 'Magenta'.
I've got to ask - how can anyone get scammed by these sort of companies? Surely following a 'no cold callers' policy is the best way to do things, that way you are the one calling all the shots?

11th November 2010, 01:43 PM #9 Just tell them the cheques in the post.... that'll teach them to use a fake address

Had Magenta call here several times even after being told we weren't interested, they eventually seemed to get the message though. Thankfully i'd read about them on here before and was able to warn the office staff not to agree to anything if I wasn't here.

They are a con, ignore at all costs. I have contacted Trading Standards re them, threaten them with that, you won't hear a thing again. Trading standards have built a case against them and are currently investigating.

This isn't a new scam. I was called by a company trying to sell me one of these "special" long-life cartridges about five years ago.
They wanted me to place an order for one right then and there (they were very persistent) and wouldn't give me any contact number to call them back on. I just laughed when they mentioned the price and hung up, but I can see how some people might get tricked into parting with money.

These guys are still doing the rounds. Very persuasive, but at £250 a toner, I told them it obviously requires three quotes from different companies, and then my administrator would have to order so as to follow the LEA guidelines. They didn't see that one coming for some reason, which I'm suprised cos I thought it was standard policy.
Anyway, avoid these con artists.
Oh and thanks Chris from CP Ltd for the advice.
