Default Research Machines

We have SuccessMaker installed on a low number of systems. Its very good, the kids work well with it and generally it runs clean. But, when a resourceful young student found the way into Admin and ran riot deleting all enrolled students - then the sloppy stuff hit the fan!

Restore from backup seemed a good idea; but which files? Didn't want to recover the lot! Call to RM...

"Sorry Sir, you no longer have a support contract. Try our knowledge Base", fair enough, support is VERY costly and when things run well...

Onto KB: register and then scan the SuccessMaker support area. Hmmm, why are most of the items greyed and not available? You need to have a current support contract to view them! But, I have a licence? You are not allowed to know what the 'FAQ of SuccessMaker backups are', or 'How to uninstall SUccessMaker from a Workstation'. Why? "You must have a support contract".

Surely its a basic courtesy to allow access to these Qs & As outside a contract? They are common both in & out of a support contract! I am not a happy bunny when being shoe-horned into yet another expensive contract for answering basic questions. Lots more 'Hhhmmmpppfffff'!

Welcome to the wonderful world of RM. We drove them out of Lancashire with torches and pitchforks.

On a more serious note though I know that there are several people on this site who can help you, if only to tut and shake their heads knowingly. Hopefully they can give you the help you need, but not for nothing is it known as Sucky Cess Maker.

We just paid through the nose for a very basic question answered. We should club together and 1 person searches the KB. They didn't recon on school techs getting together!

That's precisely what I did when I had a problem with Successmaker. I spoke to one of the other schools in the area that did have a support contract. I'm sure a few people around would be good enough to answer the occasional query.

We had this problem. The enrollment stuff was deleted, though even today,
we don't know how.

Anyway here's what we did (taken from our own KB - although I think we pinched it from RM's site)

Restore the 'enroll' file from the latest backup to the history folder

Run 'repair history' from within the Management System.

If the above don't fix it, try the following;

Restore complete 'history' including 'student' and 'teacher' folders from a good backup

Who do you think christend it Sukky Cess Maker? :P

At least all you lot aren't still trying to get shot of a RM Connect 2.4 (yes Nt4 servers with 98 clients) network!

For some bizzarre reason, RM were also holding our domain name and providing our web hosting - for £150 a year!!!!! The County IT services provide this for free!!!!! Sent the fax yesturday to sort that!

As a result of my complaining to RM, they rang personally this morning and resolved my problems with SuccessMaker. So, although a brick wall existed yesterday, today the mortar exposed some humanity in their support services - which I must say I applaud on this occasion.

A specimen to place with care in the rarities category...

To be fair, they didn't charge me for transferring my domain name - something that came as a shock!

Yeah, as soon as I started working here I moved away from the Viglen systems and installed Windows 2000 Server with Windows 98 clients.

I'm now running Windows 2003 Servers with a mix of Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro clients. Just Windows XP Pro only soon)

I've still got RM Successmaker on 15 PC's on a stand-alone network. I had a basic problem and they refused to help unless the school forked out nearly £1500 or £2000 in backup fees.

The answer was on the support page, but greyed out. £2000 to fix a simple RM problem.

Any probs then drop it in here or PM me. More than happy to get the answer for people. Claw back something from the RM Money Laundering department.
