Can the school make a backup of there dvd's like shrek for example?

Is this legal?

(Disclaimer, No legal opinion etc etc :P)
But yeah, "as far as I know" it's legal to make a personal backup "aslong" as you're not bypassing any encryption. If you can't back it up without using software to break the encryption then it's illegal (It's the distributing/bypassing that's illegal, not the personal copy part)
* Edit - and most "movies" have it on them, just not older DVDs
As far as I understand anyway :P

At the moment, format shifting is technically illegal in the UK, although unlikely to result in prosecution. But still illegal. I believe there have been moves towards getting it legalised in European legislation, so should be ok to do it by about 2019.
Search for "uk format shifting" and it brings up a few news articles on the topic, albeit a couple of years old. As far as I'm concerned it is an official "grey area".
