    Software to show how many computers are in use.

    On a recent visit to Portsmouth Uni i saw that in the computer facilities they had screens that showed how many computers were free in different locations i.e Library and Cortland building. it was displayed as a number and as a sliding bar that went from red to green. Does anyone know how we can do this on our computers.

    We use logon and logoff scripts to populate (and clear) logged on users. We query the number of logged on users every 15 mins and write it to a text file so we can look at statistics. You could probably do something similar to update a webpage?

    HI,

    I'm using FOG with the Fog client installed with user tracking enabled. The backend is a mysql db and having just checked the usertracking table it has over 90000 entries of user logons and logoffs since Aug 2010. This is done in real time with the FOG server so scripting (e.g. php) could be used to interrogate the db, compare the computers with those that have a user logged in.

    could use a red/green icon next to the computer or display number of free computers per room?

    I never though to use the db like that but just opened the opportunities. I have used fog's web interface to investigating which users had used their memory stick in which computer where the AV scanner found a virus. Tracked the users down and cleaned their memsticks up.

    @eroberts, thanks for the insight.
