Might be getting 'living eggs' again this year so was thinking of setting up basic webcam and stream views round school. Have read about using either VLC or Windows media server.
If I install windows media server on my one and only server is it likely to cope? Or is vlc a better bet?

17th January 2010, 04:02 PM #2 You don't need the full Media Server setup on the server, if the cammera is just a usb webcam hooked up to a computer you can use the free Windows Media Encoder and then use port fowarding on your router to allow the world access to it. There is a reasonably comprehensive guide here:
ComputorEdge - San Diego: Easy (Free) Internet Webcam Setup for Windows: Create a live Webcam broadcast that can be seen from anywhere in the world.
This will allow for broadcast of video with sound rather than the frame by frame type setup that the Edugeek cammera was using at Bett. For that you would need a different type of software - possibly avalible on the webcam cd or a standalone webcam that supported this feature.

18th January 2010, 12:15 AM #3 This is something else you could use. Its very easy to setup, all the users need to do is go on the appropriate URL. It can also be accessed outside the network
USTREAM, You're On. Free LIVE VIDEO Streaming, Online Broadcasts. Create webcasts, video chat, stream videos on the Internet. Live streaming videos, TV shows

18th January 2010, 12:18 AM #4 Yawcam is easy to use:
Yawcam - Yet Another Webcam Software
Use it quite a bit on things - at the moment on my pet Gerbil. [ see link below ] Oh yes and it's free.

18th January 2010, 08:09 AM #5 Another vote for Yawcam.
I found it to be very good last year as is can be used to serve video around the classrooms while at the same time doing the normal FTP upload to our website AND saving the images so I could use them later to produce video's of the egg hatching events.
Each process (Video streaming/FTP/image saving) can be configured independantly for frame rates etc.
UStream didn't work for me through CLEO firewall
regards
Simon
