  1. A few updates

Quite a bit has happened since November...

First off my Kubuntu install fell apart after most of my games library was locked out regardless of WINE. The titles that did work with WINE were too big a pain to get working again and I just wanted my incredible gaming rig back! Since my Windows 7 CD Key was coming up invalid, I found myself forced to install Windows 8 and after an initial "I hate Metro" period it proved to be quite a usable OS...if you throw Metro out the window. ...

  2. Capita SIMS Developments for 2013 - SIMs Learning Gateway

    by , 30th January 2013 at 12:10 PM
A departure from my normal blog topics to something even more relevant to a lot of schools than my normal writings.

    Introduction
SIMS is a School Management database, written and supported by Capita Education Services. 6 months has passed since I was invited to join Capita at their Annual Conference to see and write about forthcoming changes, as well as report back on the year (and ask the awkward questions from the community). In this post, Im going to pick up on SIMS Learning ...

  3. Exporting SQL Logons

    by , 15th August 2012 at 10:44 AM
Another diversion from my usual blog posts - but this one came out of necessity, when I had issues with my SQL databases for SIMS and FMS. Many of you may know that FMS has its own "SQL" logins, as does SIMS - but at least with that, you can set it to use Windows Authentication.

Anyway, my problem - I was greeted by FMS with the lovely "Cannot rollback atomic" error whenever logging in. It turns out this error (after some digging) has lots of causes - none of them ...

  4. Capita LA Conference 2012 - Alton Towers - Learning Gateway Product Update

    by , 10th July 2012 at 05:00 PM
Post 3 in this mini-series giving you the information from the Capita LA Event... and up this time; a bit of history of the SIMS Learning Gateway product with where it's headed. Incidentally at this point - this is probably the worst product name! It is NOT - never has been, never will be, was never supposed to be - a Learning Gateway. Nor was it ever going to be a replacement for SIMS.net! I did have some great discussions with Phil Neal and new product manager Ben Jones about this.

  5. Capita LA Conference 2012 - Alton Towers - Key Note: Tony Travers

    by , 8th July 2012 at 09:00 PM
This post continues from my last - discussing the themes and news from the Capita LA Conference. I know this will come as a surprise to some, who will have been expecting more "geeky" System Centre or HyperV stuff - but my community work will also form my blogs too!

The Key Note speech at the event was made by Tony Travers. Tony Travers is Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science, a research centre at the London School of Economics. He is also a Visiting ...

  6. Capita LA Conference 2012 - Alton Towers - The Year in Review

    by , 7th July 2012 at 09:28 PM
A departure from some of my more recent posts about System Centre - now time to concentrate on more of the Consultancy and Technology Evangelism Im also involved with.

This time, I was very fortunate to be invited to the Capita SIMS LA Conference, held at Alton Towers. Thanks must go to Cath Lane and her team, as well as Phil Neal and the Product Managers who spared their time to talk to me. This is the first of a selection of posts which will appear this week discussing the themes ...

  7. Using Dates in SIMS Reporting

    by

When you output dates in SIMS with the Reporting tool, the results will come out as text and cannot be converted into a proper date with the number format window. This is a fix used in the SIMS Standard Portrait template to prevent Excel from throwing a fit and entering the data incorrectly. You can modify the template and remove the fix but that is best left to advanced users, there is a simpler option.

Let's take a date in the format "1 March 2012" in cell C2. You can ...

  8. Calculating whole levels of progress in Assesment Manager

    by , 14th July 2011 at 10:17 AM
    Hi All,

We are a large sec. modern who use AM effectively through a system of templates to monitor progress. One area I am struggling with is how to calcuate whole levels of progress.

We ask the staff to enter termly assessments in a sub-level, targets are also in sublevels. I then take one away from the other and divide by two to get number of sublevels progress from target. I am unsure how I can calculate whole levels when our grade set is in sublevels. It's not as ...
  9. OK I Have To Admit Some Mistakes

    And I made a biggy!

This year we decided to set up SIMS Learning Gateway to comply with the 2010 Online Reporting requirements. These required us to provide a means of serving school reports to parents online for which Learning Gateway does perfectly. But as we roll into the close of the written reports cycle, there are lessons to learn.

First off I overestimated how much Assessment Manager can cope with. Figuring staff were used to it for single grades, it is terrible ...
  10. EEE-PC 701 4G's Back to Xandros for Electronic Registration

    by , 12th October 2010 at 02:05 PM
We're in our third year of Electronic Registration, and we looked into Registration during assemblies using EEE-PCs. The excellent Asus EEE-PCs 701 4G were the netbook of choice back then. Using the wonders of nLite we created the well documented slim installation of XP so teachers could use SIMS and register their classes during assemblies (and in other locations).

All has been well until recently, I never like XP running on these devices; it never seem to have any slick-ness which ...
