Of the 4 schools some are more of a priority then others to migrate. This is mostly due to servers that need replacing, or because of the number of new PCs being added to the network means that W7 needs to be implemented sooner rather than later.

As for the servers I am still switching back and forth on either going over to Server 2K8 or sticking with W2K3, as it can support W7 GPOs via a RSAT on a W7 machine. Sticking with W2K3 would make the roll out quick and easier in the short term, but would still leave W2K8 needing to be rolled out at a later date. Then there is also the choice of in place upgrade vs. fresh install, W2K8 vs. W2K8R2. As for which I will choose, watch this space.

Anyway now for some background. For this blog I will call the networks LAN1, LAN2.... think you can see where I am going with this. So for starters here is LAN1

LAN1 Current Setup

Servers

  • 1 HP ML350 G3 W2K3 DC – Home folders / Profiles / DHCP / DNS
  • 1 HP DX5150 Desktop (stand in for ML350 G3 that died) W2K3 DC – WSUS / SOPHOS EC
  • 1 HP ML110 G5 W2K3 – Shared Folders

Clients

  • 12 Staff Laptops (non Domain) – HP NX6110 / HP 550 / Dell Vostro 1510
  • 5 Pupil Laptops - Toshiba A100
  • 35 Dell Optiplex 755 Desktops – XP Pro
  • 8 HP DX5150 Desktops – XP Pro
  • 3 Dell Optiplex 170L – XP Pro
  • 30 Acer One Netbooks (non Domain) W7 Starter

Printers

  • 3 HP 3500 CLJ

As part of the update for LAN1 there are an additional 30 netbooks being added and 2 new servers are being purchased plus a couple of new staff laptops to replace aging HP NX6110s.

So to start the ball rolling the new staff laptops will be the first W7 machines to grace the network. These will give me the opportunity to create my base W7 image for staff laptops.... I hope.

I would advise having at least one Server 2008 R2 server on site, as it makes the KMS and activation a whole lot easier. I tried making it work with both Server 2003 and Server 2008 and I failed miserable. Apparantly it is possible, but something to look out for.

A new start! Why not look to ESXi to host your W2K8R2 DC(s) and W2K8 DC + members? Be aware of W7 laptops/notebooks having 64-bit by default - plan ahead for printing + sware integration. Check for 64bit compat. Have fun!

You should be fine deploying with 2K3 initially, I was running Vista for quite a while before moving off 2k3 to 2k8. As to the servers if you can take your time and do it right, go fresh and with 2k8 r2. You can migrate most services that are integrated into Windows quite easily and this will end up giving you the best and most stable result by far.

KMS is doable but you do need to install the right stuff on the serverside to handle it, the other option there is using an always on Windows 7 pc as a KMS server as Windows 7 will happily handle being a KMS server by just entering the KMS key into the change key bit.

i spent all of last summer on my win7 deployment, image was okay, it was the GPO's that got me and having to use WIM's...still using 2k3's for our dc's (the boss is worried about updating AD for a 2k8 dc move - he did it once from 2k to 2k3 and it failed...he doesnt understand that it was a long time ago). we managed with the use of a 2k8 R2 server with WDS to deploy one image across the whole site, so that is worth putting into your thoughts.

I used my win7 pc as a KMS server - works fine.
