Well the time has come to go down the road that is Windows 7. After many years of managing XP based machines I feel that I am ready to dive into the murky water that is migration. Thanks to the wonder of Microsoft’s EES agreement, I am know in a position to go from W2K3 servers with XP/Office 2K3 clients to W2K8 servers and W7/Office 2K10 clients. Well if you are going to change something, might as well be everything.

Now for those that don’t know, I support 4 Primary schools, all with mature networks, so that’s a possible 4 migrations! Factor in that I visit each school for 1 day a week and you have a recipe for some interesting days at work, not to mention some Groundhog Day moments!

So I plan to use this blog a means to record the trials and tribulations of the change over and maybe help some other EduGeekers out there in a similar situation as myself.

Would be interested to find out how you deal with the libraries issues in windows 7.

Otherwise we havn't had any other problems really. We still run 2003 DC's.

I'll be doing this in one primary fairly soon (next two or three months).

Have 25 W7 laptops going onto a 2003 domain in another primary in a similar kind of tmescale. Then another school looking to move to W7 / Server 08 R2 in about 12 or 18 months.

I'd love to do the lot in one great sweep, but it isn't going to happen.

I'll follow this blog and chip in along the way if I can.
