ICT Tips

A collection of short ICT Tips designed to be sent round staff, helping them learn the useful tricks and shortcuts we take for granted.

  1. ICT Tip #56 - Selecting Multiple Items

    by , 26th November 2013 at 01:26 PM
So this is a pretty dull tip, but you'd be amazed how few people know this stuff.

Using Control and/or Shift to select multiple items at once: ICT Tip 056 - Selecting Multiple Items.doc
  2. ICT Tip #55 - Email Signatures

    by , 5th November 2013 at 03:19 PM
Warning: distribution of this week's tip may result in an increase in Comic Sans MS in your inbox. Use with caution.

    (written for Outlook 2010)

(I am also happy to see that EG does not have Comic Sans MS as an option for posts )
  3. ICT Tip #54 - Out of Office in Webmail

    by , 29th October 2013 at 03:59 PM
Continued from last time, some more on Out of Office, but as done through Exchange 2007's webmail service: ICT Tip 054 - Using Webmail to set up Out of Office.doc

It's probably accurate for Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010 as well, bar a few screenshot changes.
  4. ICT Tip #53 - Out of Office

    by , 15th October 2013 at 01:50 PM
A proper, actual, useful tip this time - no half-page on something minor, no phoning it in because I forgot until the last minute, oh no. A proper page and a half on Out of Office replies in Outlook 2010, both how to use them and how they work.

Aren't I good to you lot.

  5. ICT Tip #52 - Compatibility Mode in IE

    by , 8th October 2013 at 10:19 AM
You may find this one useful to send out if you run Webmail on Exchange 2007 - when people end up with IE10 at home through Windows Updates, it breaks the display of Webmail unless you force compatibility mode. It's only a single click, but as with the engineer who charges 100 for a single tap of a hammer, it's all in knowing where to click.

  6. ICT Tip #51 - Reply, Reply All and Forward

    by , 1st October 2013 at 01:05 PM
Skipping out number 50 as that was only relevant internally, so on to #51, and continuing a theme from last time as we explain email from first principles. You'd be surprised how many people don't know this: ICT Tip 051 - Reply, Reply All & Forward.doc

  7. ICT Tip #49 - To, CC and BCC

    by , 25th September 2013 at 10:03 AM
A bit of a delayed start to the term - it all goes mad in the first week or so - but time to get back up and running with IT Tips.

This week is an educational Public Service Announcement, because no-one seems to know that BCC exists: ICT Tip 049 - To, CC and BCC.doc

  8. ICT Tip #57 - Summer Surprise

    by , 17th July 2013 at 10:37 AM
Sorry for the missed weeks - we launched a cashless catering system that has eaten all of my time.

We now find ourselves in the last week of term, when no-one can be bothered to do any learning, staff or students, so there didn't seem much point in sending out an IT tip. I thought I'd send something slightly different out instead: ICT Tip 057 - Strawberry & Cinnamon Torte.doc

(This is why we've skipped forward in the numbers, because I just sent this one out here. We'll go back to the missed ...

  9. ICT Tip #48 - Switching Windows with Alt+Tab

    by , 26th June 2013 at 12:42 PM
Another late post - although I have a good excuse this time, I was busy in the ultrasound room for my wife's 20 week scan yesterday

Following on from last week's look-at-the-shiny-3D-effect ICT Tip #47 - Switching Windows with Win+Tab, this week we have the much more useful, useable and sensible alternative: ICT Tip 048 - Switching Windows with Alt+Tab.doc

Best of luck in getting your users to use it

  10. ICT Tip #47 - Switching Windows with Win+Tab

    by , 18th June 2013 at 02:11 PM
One of those quick little tips that makes life much easier - albeit I opted to show the shiny version to people first, because some people are forever impressed by a little bit of 3D gimmickry. It's like Alt+Tab but less useful, it's... ICT Tip 047 - Switching Windows with Win+Tab.doc!

I don't know why I bother trying to build up suspense when I name the tip in the title of every post
