Warning: distribution of this week's tip may result in an increase in Comic Sans MS in your inbox. Use with caution.

  2. Obscurities: A startup script to update Securus clients

    by , 4th November 2013 at 01:03 PM
If you run Securus on your network, you'll occasionally need to update your client to resolve some daft issue. Whilst the client comes as an MSI - very helpful - it's a pain to do anything with because of the way Securus runs.

The MSI's have different product codes, so running the new MSI doesn't upgrade or overwrite the old install, it just installs alongside, and the old version seems to take precedence. Depending on how your original install was pushed out, you may not be able ...

  3. Obscurities - PCI card preventing POST / boot

    by , 4th November 2013 at 12:44 PM
This post is intended purely for future Google warriors, as it took me a while to track down and I know, from my struggles, that there isn't much discussion of the issue.

Whilst building a home theater PC for a friend earlier in the year, I hit a roadblock with the PC TV Tuner - everytime the card was installed in the system, the computer completely refused to boot.

With the PCI card removed, the machine worked as intended, no problems at all.
    With the PCI card ...

  4. ICT Tip #54 - Out of Office in Webmail

    by , 29th October 2013 at 03:59 PM
Continued from last time, some more on Out of Office, but as done through Exchange 2007's webmail service: ICT Tip 054 - Using Webmail to set up Out of Office.doc

It's probably accurate for Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010 as well, bar a few screenshot changes.
  5. SIMS .Net Install Script

    by , 29th October 2013 at 09:07 AM
Many of us find it a little annoying that SIMS doesn't come with an .msi installer. But not to worry I have put together a script to do the job. To get yourself setup follow the following setps.

    1. Download the attached .zip file
    2. Inside the root of the source folder populate it with the following installer files SIMSAMPARKSetup.exe, SIMSApplicationSetup.exe, SIMSInfrastructureSetup.exe & SIMSManualSetup.exe
    3. Also inside the same folder put your connect.ini file. If you do have

  6. VB Script to set Java security level to medium

    by , 28th October 2013 at 02:45 PM
Long story short, Java started including an expiration timer on JRE releases. So many days after a release, regardless of update settings, a dialog will start popping up asking the user to update. This really isn't an issue, but with it JRE will stop running unsigned code. Many sites that my teaching staff have come to rely on have unsigned Java apps, and keeping over 500 frozen wireless laptops up to date every time a new version of JRE is released isn't really feasible. So enters VB script ...

  7. SEN Summary and Review Reminder

by , 27th October 2013 at 09:00 AM (The Progresso Geek)
With so much going on at schools today, it's easy to miss things. So why can't your MIS remind you?

Here's a simple little widget that lists the SEN reviews in chronological order and highlights any that have gone past their date (in red) and the ones to be done in the next 3 weeks (in green). Oh, and if the learner doesn't have a review date then these are also highlighted (in grey).

  8. ICT Tip #53 - Out of Office

    by , 15th October 2013 at 01:50 PM
A proper, actual, useful tip this time - no half-page on something minor, no phoning it in because I forgot until the last minute, oh no. A proper page and a half on Out of Office replies in Outlook 2010, both how to use them and how they work.

Aren't I good to you lot.

  9. ICT Tip #52 - Compatibility Mode in IE

    by , 8th October 2013 at 10:19 AM
You may find this one useful to send out if you run Webmail on Exchange 2007 - when people end up with IE10 at home through Windows Updates, it breaks the display of Webmail unless you force compatibility mode. It's only a single click, but as with the engineer who charges £100 for a single tap of a hammer, it's all in knowing where to click.

  10. ICT Tip #51 - Reply, Reply All and Forward

    by , 1st October 2013 at 01:05 PM
Skipping out number 50 as that was only relevant internally, so on to #51, and continuing a theme from last time as we explain email from first principles. You'd be surprised how many people don't know this: ICT Tip 051 - Reply, Reply All & Forward.doc
