  1. Exams

    by , 17th June 2008 at 07:38 AM
Oh joy exams all this week, luckily I do BTEC ICT so we have no Exam for that which is excellent as I would proably get annoyed by answering questions such as "Name an email application" and "What do you use Microsoft Word for?"

At least I have study leave

So, everyone have fun at work and wish me luck!
  2. Weapons of War: the Dust Bunny Epidemic

by , 10th June 2008 at 02:09 PM (Ramblings from the Restaurant at the Ragged Edge of Reason)
Dust Bunnies, my own private war, a war waged unseen by the staff or pupils of the school. Vastly outnumbered I am left to wage war on these often unseen and unnoticed foes. They seem native so the school, appearing from out of nowhere and colonizing the cooling components of computers and switches throughout the site. Once there they breed, quietly waiting and building up their number biding their time waiting for the opportunity to rise up against us.

    The Costs:
    The ...
  3. The DMI Discontinuity and the Perils of Brand X Computing

by , 6th June 2008 at 06:27 AM (Ramblings from the Restaurant at the Ragged Edge of Reason)
    The Idea:
Built into practically all late model computers there is a small chunk of the BIOS flash memory reserved for management information such as the brand, type and serial number of the product. This was originally called DMI (Desktop management Interface) but has now been renamed SMBIOS (System Management BIOS). This little chunk of memory is accessible by a number of means including WMI and hardware identification programs such as Everest. This little chunk of information is a fabulous ...

    by , 5th June 2008 at 06:48 AM
Well we made it to our 3rd birthday and what a ride it has been so far from our first months to just finish running out latest conference. The site has always had ethos that if a member has an idea then heck if we can do something to ...
  5. Conf done, now on to the next bag of worries

    by , 1st June 2008 at 11:40 PM
Well, now the conf is all done and everyone is left happy and content it just remains for me to worry about just how to pay for it!
Don't worry, we will have enough (eventually!), but, if you didn't know, Fasthosts decided to take a years worth of hosting out of our bank with no warning, yes, it was due for renwal (I though we had another 2 months and was going to cancel anyway), but it was galling that they didn't send a reminder email, and that the invoice\receipts was automatically sent ...

  7. Cache Pilot - Search facility not working any more

    by , 18th May 2008 at 09:09 PM
The search facility on my Espresso server isn't working anymore. I have changed its ip address but nothing else. Anyone any ideas? I've looked at the search code and it seems to be Perl but I've no idea where the code is directing the search to - it doesn't seem to be ip referenced. Help please.
  8. SATA Is A Graphics Card

    by , 17th May 2008 at 09:45 AM
Yesterday at School we had a quiz on IT. Now I posted before about my teachers knowing nothing but yesterday I argued with my teacher. Why? Because in his quiz he said that SATA is a type of graphics card and that your BIOS is stored on your Hard Drive. He admitted he was wrong with the SATA question but with the BIOS he said that the BIOS does not boot automatically when you turn your PC on you have to press a button but of course when you turn your computer on the BIOS runs to set everything up ...
  9. Trying to set up Exchange withing SBS 2003

    by , 12th May 2008 at 11:54 PM
Hi This is an email I sent to some people who I thought could help...they couldn't.

I seem to have an ongoing problem with the 2 domains above, both of which I own.

It would appear that I have set up The Scan and Store Centre as a ‘sub domain’ of The Scan and Store Centre ; that apparently was my fault and so I apologies to all those IT literate people who would never make such an error, and have told me that this error is the root cause of all of my ...
