    Sharepoint and web 2.0

I’ve always wondered what it is about web 2.0 that people in education are so fascinated about. There are lots of articles out there about the history of the Web, of Darcy DiNucci originally coining the term (1999) and then Tim O’Reilly pushing the term in the O’Reilly Web 2.0 Conference in 2004. Google, Bing and Yahoo! them for ...

  2. My Brain Transplant - of a Brother HL-2040

by , 26th April 2010 at 09:28 PM (Ramblings from the Restaurant at the Ragged Edge of Reason)
My opinion of Brother printers is well known to my employers and to anyone who has read more than a few of my forum posts so todays weird task was rather strange.

At one site we have many Brother HL-20X0x series printers which routinely work fine, fine being a loose definition of cheap and only likely to jam once or twice a day. They also have a nasty little habit of burning out or cooking their paper sensor, oddly the newer ones more so than the originals.

  3. edIT Roadshow 2010 - Auckland

by , 21st April 2010 at 02:02 PM (Ramblings from the Restaurant at the Ragged Edge of Reason)
Today I attended the first edIT roadshow in Auckland, it was held at the Ellerslie Event Centre which pleasantly had lots of parking available and because of its scheduled start time did not involve an extra hour of wadeing through traffic to get to.

    13:30 - Registration
Arriving in plenty of time I wandered up to the second floor and was presented with a 'goodie bag' containing a lanyard, several flyers for the featured products and some free stuff including a micro mouse from ...

Unless you have been under a rock over the weekend, you will have heard of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano blowing it's top. Ironically, World Earth Day is this Thursday giving Geography or Library departments a perfect chance to run displays based on current events. What ideas could you use?

    • Teach pupils to say the name correctly
    • Explain how to spot the ash by looking for the sky going from blue to grey as you look towards the horizon
    • Explain how volcanoes work and the effects
    • What

    by , 15th April 2010 at 12:09 PM
Well, Shaun worked his magic for sure From the day we went live with v4.0 we've seen an almost 100% jump is visitor numbers with (on Tuesday) a record of 29,883 unique visitors coming to the site. Usually we get about 17,000 unique visitors per day, and we've been though the analytics, botth Google and Woopra and it's not an error, we really are getting that big. We are also creeping up the net rankings and we are currently (according to Alexa.com) ranked at 32,153 on the net. This puts us in ...

  7. Exchange 2007 Services

Well, I've just been a pit of a Tail Spin over an interesting problem.

We had a scheduled power outage this weekend due to electrical work on site. So on Saturday morning I was in to shut down all the servers and then back again in the afternoon to start them all up again. Thankfully, no hard drive failures this time and all seemed well.

Came in this morning to an interesting problem; some people couldn't access their e-mail as Outlook 2007 was complaining that it ...

  9. Hoping for a better week....

    by , 7th March 2010 at 04:44 PM
It's Sunday afternoon, and already I'm thinking about work already (I'll try not to write that as 'worrying about work').

Last week was a difficult week, the only good thing that came out of it was a most excellent training session at Karate because of all the stress that had built up. I appologise now to all those that I punched and kicked during that class!

Anyway, the reason for the stress......

One of my jobs each week is to assemble the school's display that is shown above reception. This typically involves a slideshow of images, which this week was provided by staff who were on a ski trip.

While looking at one image something stood out. That familiar stall where something isn't right or unusual on the screen and prevents me from moving on until I twig what it is. Students, check. Restaurant, OK that's normal so check. Appears to be at the top of the slopes, nice view in ...
