  1. My Brain Transplant - of a Brother HL-2040

    by , 26th April 2010 at 09:28 PM (Ramblings from the Restaurant at the Ragged Edge of Reason)
    My opinion of Brother printers is well known to my employers and to anyone who has read more than a few of my forum posts so todays weird task was rather strange.

    At one site we have many Brother HL-20X0x series printers which routinely work fine, fine being a loose definition of cheap and only likely to jam once or twice a day. They also have a nasty little habit of burning out or cooking their paper sensor, oddly the newer ones more so than the originals.

ID:	7599The two latest versions of Office handle paragraph breaks differently to Office 2003 and this seems to cause negative reactions from some users. Lately I have been exposed to a group of people who were new to the Office 2007/2010 way of spacing text and have discovered that they dislike the default settings.

    I think that the issue is not so much based on usability but more based on inertia with regards to previously learnt behaviour. The standard behaviour ...
  3. Windows Movie Maker (the non-Live) version on Windows 7

    by , 21st February 2011 at 01:23 AM
    OK, I know the "old" XP version of Movie Maker wasnt the best - but as far as quick (ish), easy, and user friendly and FREE movie editting goes - it ticked the boxes. It also follows all the rules for Group Policy etc with no irritations unlike some commercial offerings.

    Problem, Microsoft upset the EU Anti Trust bods, so no longer is it in newer versions. Ok, no biggy - lets use the new "Live" version. Er... no - its full of "Live" links and upload and ...

  4. Windows Thin PC

    by , 6th July 2011 at 10:52 AM
    So... Windows Thin PC (Windows Embedded Standard 7 - for its full name really) is now out, whats the story?

    Its the replacement for Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCS... ie its a cut down version of the current Windows OS, designed for older PCs to make them last a bit longer. You can use it to make a "Think Thin Client"... ie Autologon, start an RDP session and thats it.

    And thats exactly what Ive done with it.

    So, hows it all set up, and ...

  6. Check who is logged into a machine

    by , 9th February 2012 at 02:24 AM
    From time to time you may wish to find out who is logged into a machine. I find this batch file handy for doing this. Its quick, simple and easy.

    Just copy and paste the below code into notepad and save the file as who.bat

    Code:
    @echo off

    :CHECK
    echo Checking Connection ...
    ping %1 -n 1  | findstr "TTL=" >nul && GOTO MAIN || GOTO ERROR
    GOTO END

    :ERROR
    echo Device Unreachable
    GOTO END

  7. EA Games direct download

    by , 26th April 2008 at 04:14 PM (Wandering lonely as a clown...)
    I've finally got my Tuxedo card topped up and have just went on a mini-shopping spree and bought myself a few 'new' games on the EA Games site.

    How easy! All you do is choose what you want, enter your card details and voila, you can download the games! I like technology!!!

  8. The SSD experiment

    So recently our main ICT suite came up for its 4 year renewal. We use ACER 6410 laptops in there and they have done a good job over the years. Now I like these laptops a lot but they are showing signs of age with 512mb or Ram and slow 5200rpm hard disks. I didn't really want to scrap them as the laptops are working well, they just needed a significant speed boost. The first thing I did was to obviously upgrade ...

    In a discussion about student IDs I got a tad frustrated by the take some people have about Becta guidance and that it is given from a point of not really understanding how the real world works or giving examples ...
