  1. Installing a PHP/MySQL Development Server for students on Windows Server 2012 - Part2

    by , 29th April 2013 at 11:31 AM
So, continuing on from Part 1, where we set up a PHP server on Server 2012, lets get into MySQL.

You don't need to do this bit if you don't need the database functionality. There's still plenty you can teach with PHP alone, and that's what we're planning to do with Key Stage 4 anyway. Our Key Stage 5 do want to make use of databases though, so here we go...

    Installing MySQL
Open up the Web Platform Installer that we downloaded last time round and search for MySQL. ...

  2. Inside SIMS and its development - an interview with the Team

    by , 28th April 2013 at 07:13 PM
So, back at the end of January, I got the opportunity to sit down with a number of the key people behind SIMS, namely Jon Wood, Graham Cooper, Ben Jones and Phil Neal.

This follows my article on SLG; and the hints at what was to become the Spring 2013 SIMS.net release.

It was refreshing to get to speak so candidly with the ...

  3. Installing a PHP/MySQL Development Server for students on Windows Server 2012 - Part1

    by , 26th April 2013 at 03:28 PM
This is going to get lengthy. In the interests of keeping it under control, I'm going to assume you know what you're doing to a certain extent.

With all the curriculum changes in ICT/Computer Science, our head of ICT wants to start teaching more PHP, which sounds like a grand plan to me (that's where my degree is, so of course I know that PHP is the best of all scripting languages).

I have no real experience in setting up Linux servers for the usual LAMP paradigm, so ...
  4. ICT Tip #39 - Full Screen in IE

    by , 26th April 2013 at 10:04 AM
Completely forgot to put this up on Tuesday. Sorry

We're skipping #38 (which was about our school Twitter feed) and going straight to ICT Tip 039 - Full Screen in IE.doc, aka "The F11 Key"

    Share it/use it/don't sell it!

    What you will need:
    1. A logo for the Left-hand block. (i made mine 350 pixels wide - but i havent tested the impact of this in mobile view etc. Any bigger and it was only showing partially)
    2. A Primary bold

  8. ICT Tip #37 - Aero Snap

    by , 16th April 2013 at 03:10 PM
This is the killer feature in Windows 7 as far as I'm concerned. This and the searchable Start Menu.

It's simple, but I use it dozens of times a day. It's quick. It's effective. It's listed in the title of this blog post, completely undermining any attempted suspense. It is, of course, the wonder of ICT Tip 037 - Aero Snap.doc!

A lot of people have no idea that this exists, despite it being useful for nearly everyone. Send it out. Tell them. Share the joy of knowledge. Just ...

Quite a bit has happened since November...

First off my Kubuntu install fell apart after most of my games library was locked out regardless of WINE. The titles that did work with WINE were too big a pain to get working again and I just wanted my incredible gaming rig back! Since my Windows 7 CD Key was coming up invalid, I found myself forced to install Windows 8 and after an initial "I hate Metro" period it proved to be quite a usable OS...if you throw Metro out the window. ...

  10. SSRS + Widgets = Dynamic Desktop

by , 14th April 2013 at 09:00 AM (The Progresso Geek)
After 2 days of training in SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) I have now written my first report.
I wanted it to be useful but also to keep it simple what with it being my first venture into SSRS. As any of you who work with school's MIS databases will know the many different types of data that is recorded, so I decided to go for a report based on learner data.
Also, I love the fact that you can place these reports within a widget on a users desktop. So as soon as a user logs on, ...
