  1. End of Summer - Progress Report

    by , 31st August 2012 at 07:46 PM
So, it's the last Friday of Summer and our task is far from complete.

Not sure why - bad planning, bad luck, best intentions etc. It'd certainly have been easier if we were allowed to stay for full days but on the other hand I think all of us were appreciative of half days when it was nice out!

We were severely held back by an email hack; we believed at first it was easy passwords but further probing of the staff involved showed this wasn't the case. That was about ...
  2. VB Script for network printer deployment

    by , 20th August 2012 at 02:48 PM
VB script may be showing its age, but it's still incredibly useful. Printer deployment at my district is handled by means of a VB script that collects various bits of information that is then used to determine who gets what printers; said bits of information include: username, user group membership, user LDAP path, AD site name, computer name, computer group membership, and computer LDAP path. Obviously you don't need to use all of this, but this script will still pull it out for you and you can ...

  3. Advertisement Wars

    , 18th August 2012 at 12:00 PM (100 Grades Per Minute)
As a browser nomad, I find it hard to keep up-to-date with extensions and remembering to install even the basics when I jump from one browser to another. In the case of my work computer I have no say in the matter, but at home I have used no less then four different browsers since installing my OS. One extension I have routinely forgotten about is AdBlock, as you can probably tell from previous hilarious failures in targeted advertising.

Unfortunately the landscape of advertising ...

  4. Exporting SQL Logons

    by , 15th August 2012 at 10:44 AM
Another diversion from my usual blog posts - but this one came out of necessity, when I had issues with my SQL databases for SIMS and FMS. Many of you may know that FMS has its own "SQL" logins, as does SIMS - but at least with that, you can set it to use Windows Authentication.

Anyway, my problem - I was greeted by FMS with the lovely "Cannot rollback atomic" error whenever logging in. It turns out this error (after some digging) has lots of causes - none of them ...

  5. VB script for creating student drop boxes

    by , 7th August 2012 at 08:24 PM
A lot of our staff use drop boxes pretty heavily for student assignments. A drop box is pretty much a share that looks somewhat like this:

    -Building 01
       -Staff Member A
         +Drop Off
      +Staff Member B
      +Staff Member C
      +Staff Member D
    +Building 02
Every staff member of a particular building (or group) will have a folder on a share named by their last name, and under said staff name will ...

  6. Network Managers Event - 11th July 2012

    by , 7th August 2012 at 01:32 PM
On Wednesday 11th July, I was pleased to be able to welcome collegues from the Plymouth area to a “pilot” meeting – where we could discuss and collaborate on the various challenges we faced. We were also fortunate to be joined by a number of industry specialists to offer their advice and details of emerging trends.

The event started with Paul Harris, from the Micrsosoft Schools Business Team. Paul opened with the advert for Microsoft Surface – and that is the new Microsoft Surface, ...

  7. Week 2 of our new network migration

    by , 1st August 2012 at 08:45 PM
And things are looking surprisingly well. Few stumbling blocks but nothing to write home about.

First week was always going to be a bit iffy as there were still a lot of staff in. But a great opportunity to build the majority of the ICT suites and break the back of the heavy moving.
But why, why oh why did we have to do that in the one week it's constantly 30ºC?

Despite the email updates and reminders to staff we still had one member of SLT complain when I ...
