Taken from GrumbleDook Blogs As most people will have seen Becta will be cut as a cost saving measure by the Conservative – Lib Dem coalition government. There is no published timescale on this but a number of people have said they have been told it is by November 2010 (myself included). As with many others who have experienced working with Becta over the years I would like to thank the various staff there and others who have worked closely with them (and yes … that ...

Back in the days of limited memory and general user-unfriendliness, cryptic error messsages were common place and understandable only by the computing elite. As time moved on, error messages became friendlier and geared towards the user by hiding the cryptic error codes and debug information. Microsoft even announced this as a key design concept of Windows 7 compared to earlier versions. However, some software manufacturers have other ideas, especially with SIMS (connection error ...

Had a hard drive failure on what is known as our Recovery Manager Server yesterday. This is a box which sits seperately from our main server room. The main file server has an agent installed which monitors various shares; every time a user hits save, a copy is written to the Recovery Manager Server. Users are then able to recover up to 10 previous versions of any file and folder held in their home area. Its a sort of an extension of Volume Shadow Copying and saves a lot of time and effort as ...
I've been itching to upgrade BackupExec 10d for a long time, but thought I would wait for DPM 2010 to be released. We use nearly all Microsoft technologies in school so it seems ideal to backup our File shares, Exchange, Sharepoint and SQL servers, hopefully even the Hyper-V stuff I've been playing with recently. DPM 2010 has now gone RTM on technet so I installed it today. First impressions are good, it looks just like ...

I've recently been looking into rolling out Microsoft anti-virus since everything else we use is microsoft. I took a look at security essentials and its pretty good but not licensed for schools and has no centralized management capability. Forefront security is their enterprise class anti virus but it seems a long way behind the consumer version. Installing it I got errors and it didn't work with SQL 2008 or Server ...

Year 13 chose today as their "muck-up day" as the pupils call it. Hence the current sights of Post-It notes declaring how we are going to miss them (amongst other messages) scattered accross the whole school. I'm not kidding either, every wall in every corridor and room accessible to the pupils are scattered with Post-It notes. It's like a tornado of sticky bits of paper whisked through the school over Period 1 and as fast as they come down, the walls are covered again. ...
I spotted a little quirk today in Assessment Manager that anyone using it for reporting should be aware of. Over time, staff members will change and the Marksheets that have been assigned will slowly become out of date. In our case, a baby boom amongst the staff population led to a large number of maternity cover teachers being employed and thus assigned to the now teacherless classes. This lead to the Marksheets that were assigned at the start of term to be out of date and still ...
Our Windows 7 Testing is continuing. Testing is going well and so far so good. A few little issues to be resolved by third party software suppliers which I'm hoping will be fixed soon. Had an issue with a new Dell Optiplex 380 that wasn't playing nice with WDS, but Fatmas seems to have fixed that now. Office 2010 has been released to Volume customers, so I'd thought I'll take a look and see wether or not including Office 2010 in our Windows 7 deployment would be an ...
