  2. Goodbye old boy - Retiring our HTPC

    by , 29th December 2012 at 10:41 AM
Itís a sad day today. Ever since Christmas morning and the kids began to play with their new (well, second hand but new to them) Wii, it has become obvious that it was now redundant.
The media PC, the stalwart of living room entertainment for well over 4 years has to go. To be honest, itís been on the cards since we got a Tivo box earlier in the year.
Weíve had a media PC in the house since about 2004 when I used an old Athlon powered Shuttle PC to run Media Portal (MEDIAPORTAL - a HTPC Media Center for free! - MEDIAPORTAL) ...
  3. We're here (or there, depending on your point of view)!

    by , 25th June 2011 at 11:31 AM
After 2 days of travel we are finally here in Philadelphia, admittedly in a hotel by the airport 7 miles from the city centre and wondering why I'm wide awake at 5am local time.
    I HATE jet-lag
Travel from Preston to London went without a hitch on Virgin Trains and all was well as I made wy way to Kings Cross St Pancras tube station, swiped my Oyster card and made my winding way down to the Picadilly line to get the tube to the hotel at Heathrow. Mere meters from the platform the ...

  4. It must be time to renew our domain name....

    by , 2nd March 2011 at 06:23 AM
...And how do I know this? Simple, because the wonderful people at the Domain Renewal Group send me a reminder that I should. As they do every year. All I have to do is fill out the form they send through the post and hey presto they've taken our domain for 5 times the price of our current tag holder. the Domain Renewal Group are (almost) a scam. They send out an official looking invoice inviting you to renew your tag and make it look like they are the official holder of it hoping people will be ...
  5. Where are you all coming from!?

    by , 24th November 2010 at 09:25 PM
I've just been browsign teh forumsand noticed a member from Canada with over 200 posts and another US user with 300+. I mean it's great that we have such global coverage and membership, but I'm a bit ashamed to admit that I've never noticed these people before, and they've been posting for ages!!
Mind you, if more of you North American members want to say hi at the ISTE 2011 show in Philly in June plese do. It's nice to put names to faces.
  6. Tablet computers. An Apology

    by , 18th October 2010 at 09:04 PM
It's been a while coming this little article, but I have to get it out in the open. I have to apologise for any negative remarks I've ever made about tablet (slate) computers. From Android, to iPads, in fact particularly iPads, I have, over the past few weeks finally 'got it'. I understand now just how good these devices are at doing what they were intended to do, and often, more than they were designed for. And the reason for my negativity, my nay-saying? In one word ignorance. I didn't want them ...
  7. My new look.

    by , 25th August 2010 at 08:58 PM
Well, it's happened. As I've been getting older I've noticed certain things have been changing in me. It started when I'd have to go into the server room to look to see what version of firmare was installed on a piece of hardware (why some manufacturers don't include this info on the webmin I don't know!), V1, V2 etc.
I'd leave after several fruitless minuites blaming 'bad lighting' in their, sans the information I required. When reading instructions in low light or with small font sizes ...
  8. And you are calling me....why?

    by , 13th July 2010 at 02:15 PM
I got a phone call from a PR agency this morning. We usually get a few of these a week, often via email. Apparently he was looking fro Russ as he'd spoken to him at BETT, so I let him know that Russ was not here, and I was. He then began giving me the 'sell', askign who represented us etc. After a few mins I had to pop the question.

'Do you know who we are?'

Do you know what we do?'

'Do you know why we don't need ...
