They can create some interesting results out of the blue.
I'm not sure if it still does it, but google used to pretty much rip what you search for and stick it into an ad. [or it uses similar words] So, sometimes you end up with ads to "Buy slaves" if you're searching something to do with slavery. Then you have the age-old "Meet women online" style ads when you search for WoW.
Since the TOS update, it uses Web History in the Google panel to deliver ads. Since I wiped and disabled that feature on my account, it has confused it somewhat. I suppose a video of FPSRussia firing a gold AK47 does have a slightly pimp theme to it.

Facebook is pretty bad too. Most ads are targeted according to what pages you 'Like'. I unliked everything to see what would happen. Result: Facebook now delivers ads that are based off my friends' likes. -_-' I guess the next step is to delete all the friends? haha
