  1. Windows 8.1 & Free2Teach

    by , 21st July 2014 at 12:46 PM
Just to let you know Windows 8.1 (and probably 8) does not work without some tweaking on Free2Teach networks

It is due to the Local NTFS Permissions GPO. This needs to be removed to any OU that will have Windows 8 or 8.1 machines in it. I would recommend they are put in their own Organisational Unit and the NTFS Permissions GPO removed from ALL Computers and added to individual OUs and not the Win 8 one.

The Metro Tiles\Apps rely on specific permissions and the GPO ...
  2. Office 365 with ADFS 3.0 - Login with username instead of email address

    by , 17th July 2014 at 10:49 PM
    Hi all,

When we where looking into Office 365, on the ADFS login screen, we found we would prefer it if the user could login with the network username instead of email address. This is so it matches the rest of our services. with Active Directory Federated Services 3 we found on Server 2012 R2 wouldn't allow us to do this out of the box. The next closest thing was logging in with domain\username format.

However thanks to users on the Microsoft forum i have put some ...

  3. Office 365 E-mail Encryption

    by , 16th July 2014 at 11:09 PM
With the recent blog from the ICO about the thing to consider when sending E-mails parents i thought this would be an opportune time to post a quick HOW-TO-GUIDE on setting up E-mail encryption in Office 365.

I don't want to get into the specifics of why or why not to encrypt here but i'll show you what you need and how to achieve it.

First thing to consider is licensing. As far as education is concerned the only way to license a user for E-mail encryption is by purchasing ...

How to build an ICT suite

Cablers Network & AV Solutions have been providing education technology solutions to schools in the South East for many years and we have developed a few skills that many of our competitors do not come close to matching. One of the skills Cablers have developed is the ability to work with schools and colleges to design bespoke solutions that fit their education technology needs perfectly and the capability to bring those designs to life using only ...

  5. Ruckus Firmware 9.8 & support upgrade entitlement Error

    by , 30th June 2014 at 10:28 AM
    Hello,

I have just upgraded to version 9.8 of the Ruckus Firmware. But at first I got this error message after the upgrade had finished - "A support upgrade entitlement does not appear to have been purchased for this ZD. Please contact Ruckus Support further assistance. [What's this?]"

It seemed that the filtering was stopping my ZoneDirector calling back home. To resolve this issue I added the IP address 12.217.161.158 to the authentication exception in order ...

  6. Script to Map Network Shares on OSX (AFP or SMB)

    by , 30th June 2014 at 09:17 AM
I have tested mapping shares with Profiles and determined that it wasn't 100% reliable, and not as powerful as I liked. I decided to use an AppleScript to map the network shares, which is saved as an app with a nice icon and run at login. It can also be run if the shares disconnect while the user is logged in, which happens quite often since so many of our teachers just close the lid and can go weeks or months without actually logging in to their account on the network (sigh).

    The ...

  9. Data Protection and Safe Harbor

    by , 5th June 2014 at 11:47 AM
I'm a big fan of cloud services. They provide universal access to powerful software at little cost to the school, and they're convenient for both students and teachers. But data protection is a big issue to get your head around, and many schools either struggle to understand the implications of storing data online, or simply never address the issue.

I've worked with schools that have dived in head first and never considered where or how their data is being stored, and also the opposite ...
